The Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care, and helps maintain a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the RN and/or LVN in charge of the team and/or unit. The CNA assists in implementing and coordinating care based on care plans and nursing diagnoses by providing delegated aspects of care. The primary patients served on the Med/Surg unit are adults and geriatric patients. The CNA must be knowledgeable about their special needs for mobility assistance and skin care, and have the patience and understanding to assist frail elderly patients who need maximum help with activities of daily living. Pediatric patients are occasionally admitted, so the CNA must be aware of safety and psychological issues connected with hospitalized children.
