Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager and the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse, the Certified Nursing Assistant provides a variety of patient care activities and accommodative services for assigned patients. The CNA performs patient care activities within limits of the position and does not administer any medication or therapy, nor assume independent responsibility for any patient. They monitor vital signs, record intake and output, assist with nourishments and trays, assist patients with activities of daily living (oral care, bathing, positioning, and elimination), and practice appropriate safety measures. The role requires applying principles of infection control, adapting patient care to meet the needs of pediatric, adult, and elderly patients, and utilizing equipment safely and effectively. The CNA must accurately report changes in patients’ conditions to the licensed nurse, maintain a professional level of conduct, facilitate communication, and utilize lines of accountability appropriately. They participate in inservice programs, self-directed learning, and unit performance improvement activities. Outstanding service, initiative, timely responses, and active participation in department committees are expected. The role emphasizes teamwork, problem-solving, negotiation, conflict management, courteous and positive behaviors, and protecting patient/co-worker confidentiality and dignity.
