About The Position

DREAM, formerly Harlem RBI, is a growing organization serving over 2,500 youth annually through its charter schools and community sports-based youth development programs in East Harlem and the South Bronx. The Middle School Club Athletics Coach, reporting to the Dean of Student Life, will support the development of athletic skills and social-emotional learning by leading club sports teams in the after-school program. This includes planning and leading practices, coaching during scrimmages, and facilitating leadership and social-emotional learning activities.

Requirements

• Strong facilitation skills of athletics or recreational programming with youth in grades 6-8
• Experience teaching youth foundational physical activity and athletic skills
• Exhibits high energy, warmth, enthusiasm and patience in working with youth
• Demonstrated interest in assisting students develop motor skills through athletics
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent time-management skills: a self-starter who demonstrates initiative and follow-through
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team setting
• A strong belief in the mission and values of DREAM, including the belief that all students can succeed, and a deep desire to make a difference in the lives of our students, families, and community

Nice To Haves

• NSCA-CPT certification preferred
• Working towards a Bachelors of Science in Recreation or Recreational Sports Management, preferred
• Experience with behavior management systems, including positive youth development, preferred

Responsibilities

• Lead a group of up to 18-20 youth in daily after-school sports practices and occasional scrimmages
• Teach skill development and improvement in a supportive setting
• Submit practice plans that include a focus on both skill development and social emotional learning
• Facilitate or co-facilitate lessons to help youth build their social and emotional skills
• Supervise youth during travel to scrimmages and/or practices
• Communicate with school-day and programs staff about athletes' progress, with a focus on their teamwork
• Support Program leadership and other Club Coaches with coordinating scrimmages
• Model and encourage positive participation in all activities, with a focus on team building
• Model professionalism through consistent attendance, timeliness, and preparation
• Supervise and manage youth during all activities using positive youth development strategies
• Participate in professional development and tactical training in addition to formal feedback and coaching
