About The Position

Peraton is seeking a skilled and qualified candidate for their Cloud Operations & Engineering Team Lead role. This position provides technical leadership for a team of five cloud engineers responsible for provisioning, operating, and maintaining infrastructure services across a large enterprise AWS environment (500+ accounts) and a smaller Azure footprint. The role involves approximately 50-60% hands-on engineering and operations, and 40-50% team leadership and coordination. While not a formal supervisory role, the lead has input into hiring, interviews, and performance feedback. This is a 100% remote position, working East Coast hours, with potential support needs outside standard business hours.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree with 12+ years’ experience
Candidate must hold or be able to obtain Public Trust
Candidate must be a US Citizen
Five (5) years of experience in cloud technologies including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, with an emphasis on AWS
Demonstrated experience operating AWS at multi-account enterprise scale (hundreds of accounts), including working knowledge of AWS Organizations structure, organizational units, and service control policies, and how landing zone constraints affect deployments and permissions
Demonstrated technical leadership of five (5) or more engineers — setting priorities, providing technical direction, and coordinating with stakeholders — with or without formal supervisory authority
Hands-on experience operating AWS infrastructure at enterprise scale — delivering consistent, repeatable configurations across a large account estate, managing resource lifecycle (patching, refresh, backup and recovery, decommissioning), and troubleshooting deployment and access failures within an established landing zone and guardrail structure
Experience deploying and operating infrastructure as code through CI/CD pipelines (Terraform), with working knowledge of CloudFormation sufficient to read, troubleshoot, and maintain existing stacks
Demonstrated experience in incident response and operational support in production enterprise environments

Nice To Haves

AWS certification at the associate or professional level
Experience in large enterprise AWS environments
Experience with Python or a similar scripting language to build and maintain operational automation
Experience with AWS IAM Identity Center and Entra ID integration via SCIM
Experience with Azure PaaS services — App Service, Azure SQL and managed data services, Storage, Key Vault, Entra ID, and Azure Monitor — in an environment without IaaS compute or self-managed databases
Familiarity with AWS networking at scale — Transit Gateway, VPC design, Route 53, PrivateLink, Direct Connect — sufficient to operate and troubleshoot within an established architecture
Experience with Splunk, CloudWatch, SolarWinds, or similar logging and monitoring toolsets
Experience with ServiceNow, Jira, or similar workflow management toolsets
Experience supporting a migration from CloudFormation to Terraform

Responsibilities

Lead the day-to-day technical direction of the cloud engineering and operations team, including workload balancing across the account estate.
Scope and prioritize ServiceNow requests and changes, and Jira tasks, for provisioning, modifying, troubleshooting, and decommissioning cloud services.
Plan operational support activities — managed service patching, maintenance windows, cost optimization support — with stakeholder engagement.
Manage the team's on-call and escalation model, including severity definitions and escalation paths.
Identify recurring operational pain points and toil, and drive improvements to monitoring, automation, and operational process.
Advise on and improve team processes using cloud best practices and established team standards.
Coordinate with counterparts across the Cloud Business Office and other technical teams.
Communicate status, issues, risks, and concerns effectively to leadership.
Contribute to hiring, interviews, and performance feedback for the team.
Perform incident management and troubleshooting in an operations environment including stakeholder engagement for issue resolution.
Manage operations in cloud environments and ensure the high availability and performance of those environments.
Serve in the on-call and escalation rotation alongside the team, and personally lead technical bridges for incidents.
Perform root cause analysis and write post-incident reports.
Execute deployments using the provided Terraform modules and pipelines — running plans, applying changes, and troubleshooting failed runs and state issues across the account estate.
Read, troubleshoot, and maintain existing CloudFormation stacks in legacy environments.
Provision, configure, and operate infrastructure across a broad AWS service catalog, and grant and govern the permissions that allow application developers to work within their environments.
Manage full EC2 instance lifecycle: provisioning, resizing, AMI selection and refresh, snapshots, and replacement.
Provision RDS instances and perform managed service patching and maintenance window planning.
Own backup and recovery for provisioned resources using enterprise AWS Backup policies, including restore requests.
Administer AWS access management: author IAM Identity Center permission sets and create the group, account, and permission set assignments; manage the Entra ID groups that SCIM into AWS; maintain roles, policies, and permission boundaries at scale.
Build operational automation using Python/boto3 and Lambda to eliminate recurring manual toil — for example, resource inventory and reporting, and monitoring automation.
Evaluate and operationalize new cloud services, tools, and technologies.
