About The Position

Our Digital Engineering practice is helping organizations solve complex problems through purpose-led transformation. To achieve this mission, a diverse and talented team from around the globe are creating innovative digital experiences that help our clients succeed and thrive. The Cloud Modernization Senior Engineer assesses how applications are hosted today, defines where and how they should run in the future, and builds and operates the secure cloud environment that powers EY's AI-enabled modernization factory. This role brings the infrastructure perspective to every rationalization recommendation — hosting constraints, cloud readiness, migration approach, and run-rate cost — and creates the reusable infrastructure patterns that later modernization waves will depend on.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, computer engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret level clearance
  • 3-6 years of experience in cloud, infrastructure or DevOps roles (internships and co-ops considered).
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and/or Azure across compute, networking, storage, identity and monitoring services.
  • Infrastructure-as-Code experience with Terraform (or Bicep/CloudFormation).
  • Experience with containers (Docker) and working knowledge of Kubernetes.
  • Networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, DNS, load balancing, firewalls and private connectivity.
  • Linux and Windows Server administration.
  • Scripting in PowerShell, Bash or Python.
  • Must be comfortable working in-person as needed in the Washington, DC area.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in developing written and visual communication products
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Azure Government or AWS GovCloud experience; FedRAMP High environments.
  • Configuration management with Ansible.
  • Production Kubernetes experience (AKS, EKS or OpenShift).
  • Cloud cost management (FinOps) practices.
  • Certifications such as Microsoft AZ-104 or AZ-305, AWS Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional), Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) or HashiCorp Terraform Associate.

Responsibilities

  • Inventory and assess current hosting for each application — on-premises data centers, virtualized (VM) infrastructure, AWS and Azure environments, and Kubernetes or container platforms — including operating systems, middleware, runtime versions and infrastructure dependencies.
  • Evaluate cloud readiness and identify blockers such as operating system or runtime currency, licensing, network dependencies, data-handling constraints and performance requirements.
  • Define target hosting patterns and migration approaches (rehost, replatform, containerize, or refactor to cloud-native and managed platform services) and produce effort, cost and run-rate estimates.
  • Build, configure and operate the secure cloud environment for the AI-enabled assessment platform in a FedRAMP-authorized government cloud region, including virtual networks, private endpoints, network security groups, managed identities, role-based access control, key management, logging and monitoring.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or Bicep) modules and environment templates that can be reused across later modernization waves.
  • Apply Zero Trust principles and NIST SP 800-53 control requirements to environment designs and produce the architecture and security documentation needed to support authorization.
  • Implement observability and cost monitoring; right-size resources and manage cloud consumption.
  • Identify shared-platform and infrastructure dependencies (middleware, identity, integration, backup and disaster recovery) that affect rationalization and sequencing decisions.
  • Document architectures, configurations and operational runbooks.
  • Lead target-state infrastructure architecture for groups of applications and define landing zone and reference hosting patterns.
  • Lead migration strategy for complex workloads, including hybrid connectivity, backup and disaster recovery, and recovery time and recovery point objectives (RTO/RPO).
  • Review Infrastructure-as-Code and designs produced by Staff engineers and coach them on cloud engineering practices.
  • Engage client infrastructure, cloud and security stakeholders to confirm constraints and align on target patterns.

Benefits

  • medical and dental coverage
  • pension and 401(k) plans
  • flexible vacation policy
  • paid time off options
  • time off for designated EY Paid Holidays, Winter/Summer breaks, Personal/Family Care, and other leaves of absence
