About The Position

Availity is seeking a Cloud Engineer III to join our API Gateway team, supporting and evolving our production Tyk Gateway platform. This role is intended for a hands-on, senior-level engineer who thrives at the intersection of platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, and day-to-day operational excellence. The successful candidate will contribute directly to gateway stability, automation, and integration efforts while growing toward deeper architectural ownership over time. This is not an entry-level role nor a pure application engineering position. It is a platform-facing engineering role for someone comfortable working in production systems, debugging complex gateway issues, and translating architectural intent into reliable, repeatable implementations. Sponsorship, in any form, is not available for this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • 5+ years’ experience as a Cloud Engineer or Platform Engineer supporting production systems.
  • Hands-on experience working with API gateways or reverse-proxy technologies (Tyk, DataPower, Kong, Apigee, NGINX, AWS API Gateway, or similar).
  • Strong working knowledge of AWS fundamentals, including networking, load balancing, IAM, and observability tools.
  • Practical experience with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools, with an understanding of how architectural intent maps to deployed resources.
  • Proven ability to debug complex technical issues, follow incidents through to resolution, and contribute meaningfully to root cause analysis.
  • Experience writing clear technical documentation, runbooks, or operational guides.
  • Comfort working across team boundaries and supporting shared platforms used by many downstream consumers.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct hands-on experience operating or configuring Tyk Gateway in production.
  • Prior work on platform, middleware, or shared infrastructure teams.
  • Exposure to regulated or compliance-aware environments, where change discipline and traceability are important.
  • Experience integrating gateways with identity providers, centralized logging/metrics, or service discovery mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with containerized or Kubernetes-based environments (EKS or similar).

Responsibilities

  • Implement, operate, and improve the Tyk API Gateway platform in support of Availity’s production workloads.
  • Contribute to the stability and reliability of the gateway by identifying recurring issues, participating in root cause analysis, and delivering durable fixes through code and configuration.
  • Author, maintain, and review infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) for gateway components, environments, and supporting AWS resources.
  • Support gateway configuration and policy development, including routing rules, authentication/authorization integration, rate limiting, and traffic governance.
  • Partner with architects and senior engineers to translate gateway architecture and standards into practical, deployable implementations.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation and runbooks covering gateway configuration, operational procedures, and common failure modes.
  • Participate in a shared on-call rotation, serving as a responder and escalation partner for gateway-related incidents.
  • Collaborate closely with Cloud Tenant Engineering, Network, Security, and Product teams to support gateway integrations with identity, observability, networking, and downstream services.
  • Assist with platform evolution efforts, including evaluating configuration changes, new gateway capabilities, or adjacent AWS-native services under guidance from senior architects.
