We're seeking a Clinician Charge for the Cardiology Stepdown department. This role is responsible for being a capable clinician charge with broad experience in caring for patients and a sound understanding of a particular patient population. The RN will routinely use acquired knowledge, theory, research, and experience to respond to changes in clinical situations. This professional can apply the Synergy Model for Care in practice, personalizing care for each patient/family while serving as a resource to colleagues and a strong advocate for them. The role plans, coordinates, and directs the daily operations of a specific shift on a clinical unit, supervises staff, and facilitates communication with physicians and internal administrators to provide optimal patient and family-centered care. The Clinician Charge is recognized as a change agent, leading efforts to strengthen organizational systems and demonstrating creative problem-solving, conflict negotiation, and collaboration. They role model expert communication and time management skills, demonstrate foresight regarding the impact of nursing care on patient outcomes, and are recognized as an expert clinician and leader within their specialty. This role also involves completing employee conference, risk management, and unit management reports, identifying the need for revision and evaluating the effectiveness of operational forms, and providing/coordinating necessary unit resources for optimal patient outcomes. They ensure compliance with policies and procedures, stay informed of innovative clinical trends, function as charge nurse, and role model delegation skills. The Clinician Charge is viewed as a formal leader, mentors other Registered Nurses to the role of Charge Nurse, and leads/coordinates team behavior while fostering leadership skills in others. They provide direction and guidance to less experienced staff regarding policies, scheduling, assignments, organizational skills, and daily operations, and complete performance reviews with Nurse Manager input. The role incorporates the Synergy model for care in nurse/patient assignments, evaluates resource use and cost containment, coordinates unit staffing, identifies managerial problems and initiates tests of change, and actively participates in preparation for regulatory agency reviews. They assist in administrative activities such as budget planning, cost containment, coordinating staffing schedules, and communicating concerns to the Unit Director. The Clinician Charge evaluates the impact of policies on daily operations, supports administrative decisions, facilitates daily operational issues with staff, and ensures compliance with educational requirements. They exhibit a desire to understand others' points of view, demonstrate effective communication skills, take a leadership role in building an environment of open communication, serve as an arbitrator in conflict resolution, and take appropriate action to correct unacceptable communication/behavior. They counsel employees for attendance and performance issues, support unit and colleague needs, empower and advocate for nurses, address customer concerns and complaints, and handle escalated patient issues, referring them to the Unit Director or Patient Advocate when unable to resolve. The role monitors issues and their resolution, challenges and shapes systems for best possible outcomes, implements innovative approaches, and identifies/responds to the needs of unit staff. They initiate and collaborate on needed educational programs, develop management/leadership focused in-service training, demonstrate current evidence-based practice, and disseminate information. They question management practices related to research and must meet all Clinical Nurse I Employee Commitments, achieving points and contact hours as defined in the PLAN (clinical lattice) point system to maintain their position.
