About The Position

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University, specifically the Flint Animal Cancer Center, is seeking a Clinical Trials Technician. This role is crucial for managing the patient intake process, obtaining client histories, performing vital signs and sample collections, and assisting clinicians with physical examinations. The technician will administer treatments like chemotherapy and study drugs, and monitor sedation and anesthesia for procedures. Responsibilities also include data collection (lesion measurements, photo documentation), serving as a client liaison for concerns and questions about clinical trials logistics, scheduling, and client eligibility. Additionally, the position supports the clinical trials lab with protocol development, trial preparation, and close-out activities, including sample management and shipping, and study document development. Participation in required clinical trials-related training and continuing education is expected. This position is fully in-person.

Requirements

  • BS degree OR Associate's Degree AND Certified veterinary technician with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Must be comfortable with the administration and monitoring of sedation and anesthesia in dogs and cats.
  • Ability to work with others in a team atmosphere.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in veterinary oncology/chemotherapy administration.
  • Previous experience with veterinary and/or human clinical trials.
  • Familiarity with benchtop/lab procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Providing technical and nursing support to animal cancer patients, clinicians, students, and clients associated with the clinical trials service.
  • Intake of patients on clinical trials for appointments and obtaining detailed history from owners.
  • Obtaining vital signs and weight on canine and feline patients.
  • Sample collection (blood, urine, feces, tumor/lymph node aspirates) from trials patients.
  • Assisting in physical examinations and data collection including lesion measurements and photo documentation.
  • Administering sedation and anesthesia for procedures such as tumor biopsies, bone marrow aspirates, etc., and monitoring patients during these procedures.
  • Administering treatments to trials patients including chemotherapy, study drugs, and other medications by various methods (oral, intravenous, subcutaneous, intramuscular).
  • Serving as the primary client liaison by responding to questions and concerns regarding patient care and communicating clinical concerns to veterinarians and clinicians as appropriate.
  • Obtaining informed consent from pet owners and conducting client follow-up to gather information for case follow up.
  • Fielding consultation inquiries from the veterinary community and public concerning clinical trial eligibility.
  • Assisting Drs., clinical trials coordinator, and other technicians as needed with duties such as protocol development, sample processing, clinical trial preparation and close out including sample management, shipping, case report form development, etc.
  • Participating in required clinical trials-related training/continuing education.
