About The Position

Duke University Health System Clinical Laboratories is seeking a Clinical Technician II to join their team in the Department of Anatomic Pathology and Digital Analytics. This role operates on a Monday-Friday, Third Shift schedule. The Duke Health laboratories are accredited by the College of American Pathologists and certified by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. The multidisciplinary team is dedicated to serving the unique and complex testing needs of Duke Health patients by delivering accurate and timely results, educating future laboratorians, scientists, and physicians, and advancing diagnostic research. This is not a phlebotomy position, but general lab experience is preferred. The position is eligible for a third shift differential and a $2,500 commitment bonus.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • At least 2 years experience as a Clinical Tech I or Certification as a Phlebotomist plus achieve the required competency level for specified job responsibilities.
  • Basic phlebotomy and specimen processing techniques.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Effective professional communication skills to interact with patients/ customers.

Nice To Haves

  • General lab experience preferred.
  • Completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended (for assignment to phlebotomy).
  • Knowledge of medical terms preferred.
  • Certification of Basic Life Support preferred.
  • Pediatric Phlebotomy experience required.
  • National Healthcare Association (NHA) --Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy Examination (CLPlb), American Society of Clinical Pathologists-- Phlebotomy Technician Examination [PBT(ASCP)], International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences (IAPS), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), National Phlebotomy Certification Examination (NPCE), National Phlebotomy Solutions (NPS), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or another national certification as approved by Clinical Labs leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of routine and specialized technical procedures involved in the procurement, processing, and evaluation of patient specimens for diagnostic and treatment purposes.
  • Teach and perform routine clerical and technical procedures, including specimen collection.
  • Deliver supplies and procure specimens from physicians’ offices.
  • Process specimens for analysis and dispatch.
  • Perform patient registration and order entry.
  • Serve as a hospital laboratory representative and liaison with outside clients.
  • Prepare and initiate special tests and procedures, including cytogenetics, general laboratory, Point-of-Care Testing, urinalysis without a microscope, phlebotomy, and specimen management.
  • Obtain total volume, perform aliquot, and distribute all urine specimens.
  • Properly determine urine volume and label aliquot containers.
  • Communicate professionally and courteously with patients, families, and other medical personnel for problem recognition, resolution, and escalation.
  • Obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.
  • Utilize standard equipment to maintain positive patient identification, maintain clinical laboratory records, register/accession patients/specimens, and perform order entry.
  • Perform quality control, safety, and infection control procedures to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Receive and process specimens according to laboratory area procedures and protocols.
  • Receive specimens into the laboratory using Beaker.
  • Positively identify all patient specimens and verify laboratory labels/requisitions, ensuring a valid order.
  • Properly sort all specimens.
  • Participate in the distribution of specimens, supplies, and reports to appropriate laboratory staff.
  • Perform messenger/courier activities as required.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, stock supplies on carts and hand trays, and wash glassware.
  • Utilize various hospital information systems and software.
  • Assist with the maintenance of specimens and/or slides.
  • Perform routine maintenance as required by laboratory procedures.
  • Assist with word processing, miscellaneous office tasks, and maintaining office records.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described.
