About The Position

This position works directly with patients and families who have complex social situations or extensive psychosocial/mental health needs by assessing the situation, providing necessary intervention and making appropriate referrals or recommendations. It is responsible for supporting the infrastructure necessary to develop and maintain a therapeutic environment for patients/families and staff members. It also provides expertise to staff on legal and ethical issues, mandatory reporting, and psychosocial factors related to the health status of patients. This position requires flexibility of hours.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree from a graduate school of Social Work accredited by the Council of Social Work Education.
  • Current unrestricted California Children's Services (CCS) Paneling or within 6 months of hire/transfer if working in Maternal Child areas, providing services to infants and children up to age 21.
  • Expertise in the management of difficult patient, family and staff situations.
  • Exemplary organization and problem solving skills.
  • Leadership ability and collaborative style.
  • Ability to manage activities and multiple priorities within complex systems.
  • Ability to function in unstructured environments.
  • Tolerance for ambiguity, uncertainty and change.
  • Ability to work with all levels of personnel and team members.

Nice To Haves

  • Three to five years of recent relevant experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assessing complex social situations or extensive psychosocial/mental health needs of patients and families.
  • Providing necessary intervention and making appropriate referrals or recommendations.
  • Supporting the infrastructure to develop and maintain a therapeutic environment for patients/families and staff members.
  • Providing expertise to staff on legal and ethical issues, mandatory reporting, and psychosocial factors related to patient health status.
  • Completing a psychosocial assessment within two working days of admission or prior to discharge (whichever comes first) for Pediatric Intensive Care Unit coverage.
  • Including an interview of at least one of the patient’s parents or primary caretaker(s) in the psychosocial assessment.
  • Including parent(s) or primary caretaker(s) as early as possible in decision-making processes related to their child's care.
  • Completing a psychosocial assessment on suspected child abuse/neglect patients within 24 hours of identification or suspicion or prior to discharge (whichever comes first).
  • Developing a preliminary case service plan with the parent(s) or primary caretaker(s) within three working days of admission to the PICU, including assessment of significant family stress factors, environmental factors, mental health factors, and other psychosocial factors, and how these factors will be addressed.
