About The Position

The MCC Clinical Registered Nurse - Intermediate provides direct nursing care to patients at the Mays Cancer Center. Demonstrates independence when preparing equipment and aiding physicians during the treatment and examination of patients. Works under the limited supervision of the department leadership.

Requirements

  • Required certifications must remain current and valid.
  • Ability to serve as a preceptor and a mentor by fostering a teaching environment.
  • Associate's degree in Nursing required.
  • Five (5) years of professional nursing experience is required.
  • Active TX RN License required.
  • Active CPR/BLS required.

Nice To Haves

  • Possesses specialized skillset and knowledge related to palliative care, at least 2 years of palliative care or hospice experience preferred.
  • Assist team in assessing and managing pain and extending comfort and support to critically ill patients or those nearing the end of their lives.
  • Provides ongoing assessments of the impact of life-limiting chronic illness on the patient’s physical, functional, psychosocial and environmental needs
  • Assess for caregiver burnout, and provide community resources when appropriate.
  • Assist patients and their families with care plans and end-of-life decisions.
  • Educate and advise families about patients’ conditions.
  • Amenable to obtaining or maintaining certification in Hospice and Palliative nursing once eligible.
  • Collaborates with the providers to recommend policies, procedures and standards for the palliative care ambulatory program.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates advanced skills in the delivery of physical examinations of patients, performing complex medical testing and providing interpretations of results, consulting with physicians and implementing treatment plan; administers medications and injections as needed.
  • Ensures the clinic flow runs smoothly and works closely with the assigned scheduler to ensure referrals, follow-up appointments, diagnostic tests, etc. are scheduled accordingly.
  • Triages patient calls and works closely with call center team members.
  • Assists and arranges for hospital admissions as needed.
  • Follows-up on diagnostic tests, labs and ensures they are reported to the medical provider.
  • Refers patients as needed to appropriate specialist, consults and collaborates with other members of the health care team, provides daily wound care as needed, schedules follow up appointments, weekly check appointments, and procedure appointments.
  • Educates patients and family members on the therapy process.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
