About The Position

The PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (SJCRH) Specialty Pharmacy builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education to develop pharmacist practitioners with the knowledge, skills, and abilities defined in the ASHP educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. The program emphasizes comprehensive medication management, patient advocacy, medication access, specialty pharmacy operations, and interprofessional collaboration to support children with catastrophic and complex diseases. Residents who successfully complete this PGY1 residency will be skilled in diverse patient care, transitions of care, practice management, leadership, and education. Graduates will be prepared to provide high quality patient-centered pharmacy services, pursue board certification in pharmacotherapy (BCPS), and advance into PGY2 specialized residencies or other advanced practice or leadership roles within specialty, community, and health system outpatient pharmacy-based settings. This full-time, 52 week residency is designed to develop proficiency in the community pharmacy setting with specialty pharmacy practice collaboration in a pediatric research hospital in Memphis TN. The resident will engage in medication therapy management (MTM), transitions of care, medication access coordination, and patient/caregiver education. The program integrates operational filling and dispensing with direct patient care within a specialty pharmacy model that supports children with oncologic, nonmalignant hematologic, infectious disease, survivorship and rare disorders. Residents gain exposure to pharmacy administration, quality improvement, accreditation standards, research, and precepting. Longitudinal experiences include research, teaching, MTM, transitions of care, and pharmacy operations. Block rotations develop clinical expertise across oncology, non-malignant hematology, infectious diseases/HIV, adult medicine/survivorship, and elective opportunities. The program aims to prepare residents to practice independently within specialty pharmacy environments by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experiences into advanced patient care. Program Setting The residency is based in the SJCRH Pharmacy, an integrated community and specialty pharmacy model supporting the institution’s mission to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases. The pharmacy team collaborates closely with clinical providers, nursing, case management, research staff, and families to ensure safe, effective, and coordinated medication use. Residents contribute to a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment of clinical care and pharmaceutical research. They participate in direct patient care activities, education of pharmacy learners, interdisciplinary teaching, committee participation, and quality improvement. Core training sites include: • St. Jude Outpatient and Specialty Pharmacy services (dispensing, operations, patient management, clinical counseling) • Transitions of Care/Discharge Pharmacy • Oncology, Hematology/Hemophilia, Infectious Diseases/HIV clinics • Adult medicine and Survivorship programs The program fosters development within a specialty pharmacy model tailored to pediatric populations with high complexity therapy needs.
