About The Position

This role is for a Clinical Pharmacist who will also serve as a coordinator within the pharmacy management team. The coordinator directly supervises pharmacy personnel during daily operations, recruits, promotes, disciplines, and terminates pharmacy staff. They develop job descriptions and performance standards, evaluate and counsel staff on their performance, and lead by example. This position works with other department coordinators, the pharmacy clinical manager, pharmacy operations manager, and the director of pharmacy to develop, maintain, and improve pharmacy operations, including staff scheduling and workflow. The role ensures compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and all applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations. The Clinical Pharmacist must be able to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of a diverse patient population, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, psychiatric, oncology, obstetric, chemically dependent, rehabilitation, and skilled-nursing patients. They must also possess strong analytical/problem-solving skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate complex information effectively.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy or higher degree.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Currently licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of Texas.
  • Minimum of 3 years of practice experience as a pharmacist.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.
  • Ability to set priorities, make critical decisions, and respond quickly to emergency requests.
  • Perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified times.
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to integrate knowledge with job situations.
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills.
  • Ability to strongly communicate and interact with all levels of professionals, including but not limited to physicians and nursing personnel, managers, various support staff departments, physician offices, in a non-confrontational manner.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises pharmacy personnel during daily operations.

  • Works with other department coordinators, pharmacy clinical manager, pharmacy operations manager, and director of pharmacy to develop, maintain, and improve pharmacy operations (staff scheduling, workflow, assigned duties, etc.).
  • Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures applicable to pharmacy services.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members.
  • Meets the pharmaceutical care needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, psychiatric, oncology, obstetric, chemically dependent, rehabilitation, and skilled-nursing patients.
  • Demonstrates an advanced level of clinical skills and the ability to support others to achieve the delivery of quality care.
  • Functions as a resource person for staff members and assists in necessary education of individual pharmacy technician staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for the overall quality of pharmacy care provided by the department in collaboration with managers & director.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills and competency in leadership, supervision, and management of staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for direction and coordination of all functions in the absence of the managers or director.
  • Demonstrates excellent skills in planning, organizing, and managing personnel resources in a cost-effective and productive manner for the operational area of the pharmacy department.
  • Plays an active role in scheduling and ensuring the needs are met for the department in terms of staffing.
  • Prepares and dispenses drug orders per physician request according to established policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Interprets drug orders and transcribes to computerized patient medication profiles accurately.
  • Maintains accurate, complete pharmacy patient medication profiles.
  • Compounds and dispenses pharmaceuticals including sterile products, chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition products accurately.
  • Issues controlled substances to patient care areas and maintains records as required by law.
  • Contributes to the quality and effective operation of the department.
  • Supervises and directs pharmacy support personnel.
  • Verifies the daily activities of pharmacy technicians.
  • Participates in the performance appraisal of pharmacy support personnel.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.
  • Ensures pharmacy services are provided in a timely manner.
  • Answers the telephone, identifying self and department.
  • Directs calls to appropriate personnel.
  • Answers requests at the window and makes STAT deliveries to patient care areas when requested.
  • Continuously monitors volume/workload, assists with directing staff in managing the workload for optimal patient care and efficiency (making sure ‘Take Home scripts’ are checked/sent in a timely manner to aid in smooth patient discharge).
  • Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately.
  • Files in appropriate locations.
  • Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department.
  • Completes all assigned medication storage area inspections in a timely manner.
  • Conducts quality monitors, collects data, and completes documentation, as assigned.
  • Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well organized.
  • Keeps pharmacy equipment and areas clean, neat, and well-organized.
  • Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
  • Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
