About The Position

Supports the mission of the department by providing pharmaceutical care to all patients at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham. This includes reviewing electronic and written orders to ensure appropriate medication, route, dose, and dosing interval. The role involves interfacing with the healthcare team to resolve issues with medication orders, supervising support staff (technicians and interns) to ensure correct medication preparation, and serving as preceptors for pharmacy students to ensure a high-quality educational experience. Additionally, the Clinical Pharmacist serves as the pharmacy liaison on assigned committees, acting as an expert in pharmaceutical care, drug information, and pharmacy operations. The role also involves being the organization's drug information expert, providing timely information, inservices, drug information sheets, and drug reviews. Participation in departmental and organizational quality assurance and performance improvement projects is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in Pharmacy required.
  • 1-3 years related work experience required in clinical hospital experience.
  • License Massachusetts Pharmacist required.

  • Doctoral degree in pharmacy preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Clinically reviews all medication orders to ensure medications entered into patient profiles are safe for administration, assessing drug selection, allergy, dose, route, diagnosis, relevant labs, therapeutic duplication, drug interactions, and patient age.
  • Dispenses medication to automated dispensing cabinets (ADC) on nursing units in accordance with departmental policy and patient safety.
  • Reviews orders entered into the computer system by Licensed Independent Prescriber, ensuring appropriateness for the patient regarding selection, dose, and dosing interval.
  • Enters written orders into the Pharmacy computer system, paying attention to how the medication will be administered by the nurse.
  • Supervises pharmacy technicians, graduate pharmacists, pharmacy interns, and PharmD students to ensure daily patient needs are met.
  • Educates members of the department and healthcare team on safe medication practices.
  • Serves as preceptors for pharmacy students, ensuring a high-quality educational experience.
  • Serves as the pharmacy liaison on assigned committees, acting as the expert in pharmaceutical care, drug information, and pharmacy operations.
  • Serves as the drug information expert in the organization, providing drug information in a complete and timely manner.
  • Provides inservices, drug information sheets, and drug reviews as assigned.
  • Participates in departmental and organizational quality assurance and performance improvement projects.
