About The Position

Under the supervision of the specialty pharmacy manager, this role facilitates the safe, effective, and economically responsible use of specialty medication with attention to quality measures, safe storage, and patient health outcomes. The Clinical Pharmacist performs quality assurance, procurement, dispensing, and delivery of specialty medications adhering to state and federal laws. They collaborate with specialty pharmacy management to support sales, operational, and financial goals of the specialty pharmacy as a specialty pharmacy subject matter expert. This role also completes complex prior authorizations by retrieving labs and other pertinent information from the hospital system, obtains other insurance over-rides, and delivers medication coordination reminders. The Clinical Pharmacist facilitates exceptional patient care by resolving barriers to medication administration.

Requirements

  • Pharm D from an accredited college or university or BS in Pharmacy from an accredited pharmacy school, college, or university with 0-3 years of experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of current theory and practice of proper pharmacy services.
  • Knowledge of clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, adverse drug reactions and drug interactions and ability to interpret clinical laboratory data.
  • Data analysis and interpretation.
  • Ability or organize and prioritize the day-to-day activities to be most efficient when assigned to specialty pharmacy, retail pharmacy, and oncology dispensary.
  • Problem assessment and resolution.
  • Quality event root cause analysis.
  • Pharmacy inventory management.
  • Mastery of medication prior authorization process and insurance adjudication.
  • Ability enter data in various computer application in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ability to coordinate the work of others when tasked.
  • Knowledge of personnel practices such as monitoring attendance, evaluating & improving performance, and handling customer/patient concerns.
  • Interdisciplinary team management and collaboration.
  • Excellent oral and written communication adhering with HIPAA guidlines.
  • Effective critical thinking skills.
  • Competence in safe medication handling.
  • Current Maryland State Pharmacist License.
  • Ability to walk and stand up to one hundred percent (100%) of work time.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Performs quality assurance, procurement, dispensing, and delivery of specialty medications adhering to state and federal laws.
  • Collaborates with specialty pharmacy management to support sales, operational, and financial goals of the specialty pharmacy as a specialty pharmacy subject matter expert.
  • Completes complex prior authorizations by retrieving labs and other pertinent information from the hospital system.
  • Obtains other insurance over-rides and delivers medication coordination reminders.
  • Facilitates exceptional patient care by resolving barriers to medication administration.
  • Fills prescriptions in accordance with scope of professional license and ensures proper recordation of drug use including ordering, storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals, including controlled substances.
  • Prepares intravenous admixture solutions, ensuring compatibility and stability of various additives in these specially compounded solutions.
  • Organizes daily operations of assigned dispensing area and closely reviews work of pharmacy interns, technicians and perform the duties as a preceptor for pharmacy students.
  • Advises physicians and nurses about drug interactions, incompatibilities, side effects, instructions for drug administration, and the matters pertaining to the optimum use of medications.
  • Resolves any issues pertaining to medication use, clarifying orders, and providing drug information between patient care areas and the Pharmacy Department.
  • Performs MUE (Medical Use Evaluations).
  • Facilities the safe, effective and economic use of drugs in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Identifies and anticipates issues, takes responsibility for correcting it with a well-thought-out solution.
  • Participates in interviewing & hiring new employees, oversees the orientation & training of new & current employees, provides performance feedback periodically and maintains the documentation necessary to support decisions related to performance.
  • Mentors colleagues, co-workers and students.
  • Follows-up on the reporting of Adverse Drug Reactions and assists with the quality improvement activities in the department.
  • Monitors, investigates and responds to customer feedback, modifying office systems as needed.
