About The Position

NYU Grossman School of Medicine, a top-ranked medical school and an integral part of NYU Langone Health, is seeking a Clinical Nutritionist for its Gastroenterology department in Manhattan. This role involves providing nutrition education and care to patients in an outpatient setting as part of a multidisciplinary team. The primary responsibility is to offer consulting services, including patient education (individual and group), evaluation, documentation, and the development and implementation of an outpatient nutrition education program aimed at optimizing postoperative outcomes, weight loss, and overall health. Additionally, as a Certified Diabetes Educator, the role includes providing diabetes self-management education and training.

Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Nutrition, or equivalent Education in Nutrition that meets the CDRs education requirement for certification.
  • Current Registered Dietitian Certification from the CDR.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Windows, Excel and an email system.
  • Flexible and adaptable schedule to facilitate classes, as needed.
  • Current knowledge of nutrition therapy and skills in educating small and large groups.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure by prioritizing work activities or re-negotiating deadlines.
  • Ability to give constructive feedback when teaching patients and staff.
  • Maintain a positive attitude with changing conditions.
  • Appropriate interventions and follow-up performed on identified projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Nutrition, public health or health care field preferred.
  • Certification by the National Certification board of Diabetes Educators preferred or accumulate hours to fill the prerequisites to achieve the certification.
  • Proficiency with the internet, PowerPoint, Access, and GroupWise experience a plus.
  • Membership in the American Society of Bariatric Surgery preferred.
  • One-two years of experience as a registered dietitian.
  • Comfortable with GI nutrition.
  • Experience with elimination diets for IBS and eosinophilic esophagitis.
  • Experience with nutrition management of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).
  • Experience with dietary strategies for constipation and bloating.
  • Understanding of the nuances of celiac disease.
  • Experience managing tube feeds preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, evaluates, and provides individual patient consultations and group education programs, including nutrition consultation with family members, staff, and physicians.
  • Develops and updates nutrition education manuals for outpatient settings.
  • Develops and implements medically supervised physician-monitored weight management programs as needed, according to health plan requirements.
  • Implements performance improvement strategies identified through program outcome reviews.
  • Involved in nutrition care planning across the Continuum of Care, including in-servicing inpatient dietary staff, providing preoperative and postoperative classes, and offering one-year postoperative follow-up care.
  • Assists in tracking for database outcomes and patient flow.
  • Manages and requests appropriate educational resources for the education program.
  • Assists the program director in program development and marketing.
  • Works with the program director and coordinator on instituting provisional status as a Center of Excellence under the ASMBS guidelines.
  • Ensures patient needs for special diets and altered meal schedules are met.
  • Identifies patient diet knowledge deficits.
  • Prescribes food and other nutrients, including nutritional support, per protocol or under the direction of the MD.
  • Attends multidisciplinary patient care rounds and pertinent clinical meetings as required.
  • Participates in and provides education programs for marketing, community benefit, and NYU staff education.
  • Attends and participates in community lectures and support groups.
  • Documents consultations/education and provides follow-up data to referring physicians.
