About The Position

Teach and evaluate students in clinical settings at various medical facilities. This role involves modeling effective communication, assisting students with learning concerns, and fostering an understanding of professional values. The instructor will establish and maintain relationships with clinical sites, participate in faculty meetings, and provide instruction in clinical, classroom, and simulation lab settings. Key responsibilities include supervising a group of students (typically 6-10), coordinating patient assignments with site clinicians, orienting students to the clinical area, demonstrating procedures, leading discussions to assess learning, teaching practical skills, maintaining clinical standards, and evaluating student performance. The instructor must maintain current professional practice knowledge, communicate with coordinators to resolve issues, and collaborate effectively with the faculty team. Participation in program evaluation and adherence to College and Board of Nursing expectations are also required. A student-friendly manner and respect for students, faculty, and staff are essential. Clinical instructors may be subject to vaccination requirements by clinical sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Credentials must be unencumbered with the Missouri State Board of Nursing.
  • Successful completion of criminal background check and drug screening.
  • Required current CPR certification.
  • Provide evidence of immunizations as per nursing program policy.
  • Two years of clinical practice, administration, or education.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Provide sound evidence of effective teaching ability and management.
  • Possess creative, innovative, and diverse approaches to teaching.
  • Ability to develop interpersonal relationships with faculty, students, and cooperating agencies.

Nice To Haves

  • Those desiring to provide clinical instruction in our PN-ADN (RN program), who do not hold a Master’s of Science in Nursing will be required to actively pursue their graduate degree in nursing within three years of employment and complete their degree within five years.
  • If you are interested in clinical instruction with our ADN cohort, a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) will be required to be obtained within 3-5 years of hire as a part of our accreditation.

Responsibilities

  • Review and understand course objectives, both classroom and clinical, and apply teaching techniques to best achieve course and program objectives.
  • Model effective oral and written communication that engages students, provides clarity, and improves student learning.
  • Discuss with students their concerns and/or problems directly or indirectly related to the learning experience.
  • Assist the student to develop an understanding of values, attitudes, and ideals appropriate to the health care profession.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with new and existing clinical sites.
  • Participate in meetings, both formally and informally, with didactic and clinical faculty members.
  • Provide clinical, classroom, and clinical simulation lab instruction when needed.
  • Supervise care provided by a group of students (usually 6 to 10 students in a group) while they complete their clinical rotation in your area of specialty.
  • Coordinate with clinicians at the clinical site to make student patient assignments.
  • Orient students to the clinical area, and demonstrate proper procedures.
  • Lead discussions and elicit information from students which demonstrate that students are learning and accomplishing the clinical objectives.
  • Teach students how to perform duties in the clinical site and answer their questions.
  • Maintain clinical standards and course expectations throughout each course or term.
  • Evaluate and grade student performance.
  • Maintain the professional practice knowledge base needed to instruct learners in contemporary nursing practice.
  • Communicate with Lab Coordinator or Program Coordinator as necessary to resolve issues or concerns in clinical areas.
  • Work effectively as part of the overall faculty team demonstrating positive interpersonal relations, collaborating with other faculty members to meet student needs, participating in faculty meetings and nursing program committees, and responding to requests from management.
  • Participate in ongoing program evaluation activities as needed.
  • Maintain faculty expectations as required by the College and the Board of Nursing.
  • Demonstrate proper respect for students, faculty, and staff and has student-friendly manner in the conduct of class.
  • Clinical Instructors may be subject to vaccination requirements established by clinical sites to conduct on-site instruction for NCMC.
