About The Position

A Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a registered nurse with graduate-level nursing preparation (master's or doctoral) who serves as a clinical expert in evidence-based nursing practice within a specialty area. They manage the health concerns of patients and populations, practicing autonomously and integrating knowledge of disease and medical treatments into patient care. CNSs design, implement, and evaluate patient- and population-based programs, providing leadership to advance nursing practice for quality and cost-effective outcomes. In some jurisdictions, CNSs may have prescriptive authority for pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments and can order diagnostic tests. They act as patient advocates, consultants, and researchers. The specialty area can be defined by population, type of problem, setting, type of care, or disease/medical specialty. Specialization involves in-depth graduate study to analyze and refine nursing practice and generate clinical knowledge.

Requirements

• Minimum of 1 year of nursing experience.
• Master's Degree in Nursing.
• Ability to utilize and navigate Electronic Health Records and other technology.
• Expertise in a specialty.
• Excellent verbal and written skills.
• Current state of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or a Multi-state Nursing License from a participating state in the NLC.
• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent within 90 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

• 2 to 3 years of work experience in a healthcare related field.
• Certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist within 3 years of employment.

Responsibilities

• Treat and manage the health concerns of patients and populations.
• Design, implement, and evaluate patient-specific and population-based programs.
• Provide leadership in advancing the practice of nursing to achieve quality and cost-effective patient outcomes.
• Address system problems and/or patient care issues with alternative solutions.
• Perform comprehensive health assessments.
• Develop differential diagnoses.
• Provide pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments (if prescriptive authority is held).
• Order diagnostic and laboratory tests (associated with one's specialty).
• Serve as patient advocates, consultants, and researchers.
• Function optimally across the three spheres of practice: patient, nursing staff, and system.
• Communicate with CNO and Directors for mutual expectations and priority setting.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
