The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) adheres to the core competencies defined by the National Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Competency Task Force and recognized by the American Nurses Association (ANA). The CNS practices through 3 spheres of influence: patient, unit/department, and organization. They provide leadership, clinical expertise, education, program development, and consultation to promote nursing practice standards. The CNS collaborates with leadership to develop patient care criteria, assess patient/population health needs, and evaluate nursing interventions for optimal outcomes. They facilitate problem-solving and decision-making to influence the development, implementation, and evaluation of patient and unit/department goals.
