About The Position

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Perioperative Services is responsible for advancing the standard of nursing practice within three spheres of influence: patient, nurses and nursing practice, and organizations and systems. This role involves expert clinical practice, education, consultation, systems leadership, serving as a change agent, collaboration, and research. The CNS functions with a high level of independent judgment, utilizing advanced education and experience to enhance patient care. They contribute an expert clinical nursing perspective to organizational planning and decision-making through advanced knowledge, problem-solving, evaluation, collaboration, leadership, and role modeling.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in nursing
  • Clinical focus in area of specialty (perioperative services or heart and vascular)
  • Current RN License in State of Michigan
  • Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with an approved certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is required.
  • Acceptable CNS certifications include: (Adult Health, Pediatric Nursing, Gerontological Nursing, Public/ Community Health Nursing, Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health, Child/ Adolescent Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner (approved by National Certification Corporation)

Responsibilities

  • Develops criteria for and evaluates the quality and effectiveness of practice within the spheres of influence: the patient, nursing, and nursing practice, and organization and systems.
  • Directly interacts with patients, families, and groups of patients to promote health or well-being and improve quality of life.
  • Provides advanced nursing management of health, illness, and disease states with a holistic perspective.
  • Consults with and advises nurses and other health care team members in the care of the complex patient and family by assessing, interpreting, planning, implementing, and evaluating care.
  • Supports consultees in problem-solving based on specialized clinical expertise.
  • Acts as a resource and role model for collaboration by mentoring nursing staff and members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Influences resource utilization to promote safe, high-quality, and cost-effective patient care aligned with the IOM Aims.
  • Provides resources for continuous quality improvement related to quality of care issues and efficient use of clinical resources by working with appropriate committees and management structures.
