About The Position

A Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Extern is a registered nurse who is enrolled in a graduate program and is in training to become a certified Clinical Nurse Specialist. The intent of the role is to assist transition into full CNS practice in a supportive way, and all job responsibilities will be carried out under the supervision of a certified CNS. The CNS Extern will function within three spheres of impact (Patient/Client, Nurses and Nursing Practice, Organization/System, and is an active participant in the nursing leadership team. The CNS Extern specialty may be focused on individuals, populations, settings, type of care, type of problem or diagnostic systems subspecialty. The CNS Extern practices with the support of a formal mentor to integrate knowledge of disease and medical treatments into the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients' illnesses. These nurses design, implement and evaluate both patient-specific and population-based programs. CNS Externs provide leadership in advancing the practice of nursing to achieve quality and cost-effective patient outcomes as well as alternative solutions that address system problems and/or patient care issues. CNS Externs serves as patient advocates, consultants and researchers in various settings. (ANA, 2004, p15).

Requirements

  • Registered nurse enrolled in a graduate program
  • Minimum of 3 years of successful work experience as an RN
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
  • Enrolled in a Master, post-Masters certificate or DNP level accredited CNS program with completion of specific coursework - advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology & advanced physical assessment and a portion of required clinical hours
  • Completion of formal Masters, post-Masters certificate or DNP program with CNS concentration required within 2 years of starting CNS Extern role
  • Licensed to practice nursing in Wisconsin
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent within 90 days

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 3 years of successful work experience as an RN in a specialty area
