About The Position

UChicago Medicine is seeking a collaborative and dynamic Clinical Nurse Educator – Diabetes (CNE-D) with current CDCES credentialing to support our inpatient diabetes education program across adult and pediatric populations. This role, reporting through the Clinical Nutrition and Diabetes Patient Education leadership team, serves as an educator, consultant, mentor, advocate, and clinical resource focused on advancing diabetes care, improving patient outcomes, and supporting professional nursing development. In partnership with nursing leadership and interdisciplinary teams, the Clinical Nurse Educator – Diabetes provides specialized education in diabetes management, including insulin administration, glucose monitoring technologies, and insulin pump therapy. The role also supports the ongoing development of nursing and clinical staff through evidence-based education, coaching, and mentorship to promote safe, high-quality patient care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
  • Current Illinois RN license required
  • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) credential required
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant clinical nursing experience, preferably in an acute care setting
  • Strong knowledge of pediatric and adult diabetes management, including insulin pump therapy and diabetes technologies
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of patient education principles, adult learning theory, and evidence-based clinical practice
  • Ability to effectively educate and support patients and families from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, educational, and literacy backgrounds
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Nursing or related education field preferred
  • Previous experience in a role as an educator preferred
  • Previous experience working within multidisciplinary teams or nursing leadership committees preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assesses the educational needs of pediatric and adult patients with diabetes, as well as their families and support systems.
  • Provides individualized and evidence-based diabetes self-management education, including insulin administration training, blood glucose meter and continuous glucose monitor (CGM) education, insulin pump therapy education, and survival skill education.
  • Utilizes standardized and customized teaching tools to evaluate patient and caregiver understanding and competency.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to support timely discharge planning and continuity of care across inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, nursing staff, providers, and consult services to coordinate education and care needs.
  • Assesses learning needs of nursing and clinical staff within the specialty area.
  • Develops and implements educational programs and competency-based learning activities related to diabetes care and clinical practice.
  • Designs and facilitates educational initiatives aligned with organizational priorities, evidence-based practice, regulatory standards, and quality improvement goals.
  • Designs and delivers educational activities using adult learning principles and diverse teaching methodologies.
  • Promotes a culture of continuous learning, professional growth, and clinical excellence.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of educational programs through learner feedback, competency assessment, practice change, and outcome measures.
  • Supports quality improvement, patient safety, and practice standardization initiatives related to diabetes management.
  • Serves as a clinical resource and subject matter expert in diabetes education and management.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary committees, practice initiatives, and organizational projects as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
