About The Position

Provide leadership and direction through the coordination, planning, and oversight of day-to-day operations. Support optimal patient care by facilitating effective resource management, providing operational coverage, and advancing special projects and program-wide priorities. Promote high standards of safety, efficiency, and patient outcomes through strong collaboration and integration of continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a four (4) year Bachelor’s Degree with a specialization in a health-related field (e.g. Medical Science), from an accredited university.
  • Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with an applicable regulatory college is required.
  • Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in an Acute Medical and/or Surgical department, within a health care environment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ working in a leadership/supervisory role, preferably within a health care environment.
  • Demonstrated superior knowledge and understanding of a variety of groups of stakeholders, both within and outside the hospital.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff performance, and initiate and conduct performance evaluations in accordance with HSN policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide a customer focused approach to service delivery.
  • Demonstrated time management, prioritization, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and apply hospital and departmental policies.
  • Proven ability to develop, monitor, administer and report on budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, advise and teach others using the principles of adult learning.
  • Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and principles of management, hospital committee structure, conflict management and resolution, system needs analysis and organizational assessment.
  • Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with health care providers and employees.
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
  • Successful Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

Responsibilities

  • Design, promote, and facilitate the use of systems to ensure that the provision of patient care is consistent with departmental and professional standards.
  • Identify problems and deficiencies in the delivery of optimal patient care and facilitate a multi-disciplinary approach to the formulation of solutions.
  • Coordinate day-to-day utilization of human and material resources to achieve department functions.
  • Determine and document space, equipment, supply, and service requirements; select and purchase equipment and supplies as budgeted/approved.
  • Provide hospital wide, on-call coverage for problems and serious issues after hours and on weekends according to scheduled rotation.
  • Develop and implement goals, objectives, and procedures for department operation using lean principles.
  • Develop annual budgets and assume fiscal accountability of the departmental operation according to approved budget.
  • Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors; investigate, report, debrief and take or direct corrective action as appropriate on incidents.
  • Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  • Manage human resources which include: recruitment, selection and training.
  • Guide, motivate, monitor and supervise staff, develop standards of performance, evaluate performance and make recommendations on disciplinary action if required.
  • Provide strategic oversight for the Medicine Program’s quality improvement portfolio by leading, coordinating, and evaluating quality and safety initiatives aligned with hospital priorities.
  • Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
  • Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  • Participate in the accreditation process and work to ensure that the program and HSN achieve, maintain and continually improve upon their accredited status.
  • Teach, coach and lead staff in the development and monitoring of quality indicators and improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in and foster professional development of all staff and provide opportunities for learning within budgeted resources.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders/organizations/community groups to achieve program objectives, integrate and link services and foster partnerships across the continuum of service delivery.
  • Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  • Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.
