About The Position

The Clinical Laboratory Specialist performs complex pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic processes, and may perform specimen collection. Uses established knowledge base of clinical indications for laboratory testing and processing. This is a 0.8 FTE position on the Anatomic Pathology team. The team member will learn two AP prep team roles: cytology, histology, TCN campus pathology support and/or AP Sendouts support. Start times vary based on the role for the day and include 0530, 0730, 0800, and 0830. This position is Monday-Friday with an every 5th weekend and holiday on-call rotation for bone marrow support. Team members in this role will work at the TCA and TCN campus.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED preferred
• Must be 18 years of age
• Two years of laboratory experience and Associate’s degree or four years of equivalent experience in progressive complexity of responsibility in a laboratory.
• Completion of BLS Certification will be required for candidates working at ThedaCare Medical Center – Wild Rose

Responsibilities

• Performs complex processes including collecting bone marrow, performing and staining pathology frozen specimens, performing EKGs, processing and resulting send outs, and resulting moderately complex testing.
• Obtains specimens from inpatients and outpatients following proper identification protocols and appropriate techniques to maintain the integrity of the specimens and prioritizes collections to meet established turnaround times.
• Supports patient testing by performing waived testing, loading analyzers, and performing lab functions, as needed, to meet patient demands.
• Adheres to OSHA and ThedaCare department policies for specimen collection and handling to ensure a safe work environment.
• Provides training for new lab and non-lab team members to retain top talent.
• Performs specimen-related computer functions with accuracy and speed including entering physician’s orders, processing cancelations, and entering add-on tests to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Enters, activates, and/or reviews physician’s order in the system with accuracy for patient safety and quality.
• Maintains supplies and assists with inventory and ordering to ensure the availability of supplies to perform patient care responsibilities.
• Performs special specimen collections (i.e., legal specimen collections) to support patient testing and follow up as required by law.
