This is a PRN position to cover various shifts, including nights and weekends. The Clinical Laboratory Assistant collects and processes patient blood samples obtained by venipuncture and/or capillary puncture in a timely and accurate manner. They also process nonblood patient specimens, assist in specimen preparation, receipt, and transport, and perform patient registration. The role involves providing phone support, maintaining competency with hospital and laboratory information systems, and training new team members and students. The assistant receives lab orders, prepares documentation, performs routine laboratory tests, and maintains necessary documentation for all tests and specimens according to standards. They maintain knowledge of specimen collection devices and tubes, maintain equipment, keep the area clean, stock supplies, and keep the workspace organized. The position requires practicing sterile technique, preventing cross-contamination, handling blood and body fluids, and dealing with infectious patients. Minor laboratory procedures, including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and immunology, are performed accurately and efficiently under minimal supervision. Phlebotomy is performed through venous and capillary puncture, observing strict principles of antisepsis. Urine specimens are received and collected for routine tests, and specimen preparation is performed for all procedures/tests. The assistant maintains supplies inventory, communicates needs to the supervisor, and reports in-house test results and abnormal findings to clinical staff. Compliance with all policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness, and infection control is mandatory. General safety procedures are followed, and appropriate PPE is utilized.
