This position is accountable for performing clinical laboratory testing, following all applicable policies and procedures. The Clinical Lab Scientist I independently performs moderate to highly complex clinical tests, prepares reagents, tests new reagents, determines specimen acceptability, enters results, monitors computer reports, adheres to analytical schedules, evaluates analyses, recognizes and responds to critical values, performs instrument maintenance and calibration, evaluates instrument performance, performs quality control and calibrations, selects and evaluates control materials, initiates corrective action, performs and records proficiency testing, detects and corrects technical and operational problems, tracks and labels reagents and supplies, maintains a safe work area, communicates effectively, participates in staff and quality improvement meetings, takes on additional responsibilities, follows safety and infection control guidelines, collects and disposes of waste, maintains confidentiality, provides supervision and training to unlicensed staff, supports training programs, and maintains professional growth and development through continuing education. The continuing education must meet the education requirements for California state licensure. This position also answers phones, transfers calls, or takes messages, and complies with all health and safety policies, procedures, and practices, including the use of personal protective equipment.
