About The Position

The Emergency Medicine Telehealth Fellowship is a one-year, non-ACGME advanced training program, with an optional second year to pursue an MBA or MHA. It prepares physician leaders to transform emergency care through digital innovation, strategic leadership, and systems-level change. The fellowship integrates administration, research, and education, using telehealth and emerging digital technologies to address patient care barriers, improve access, and enhance the quality, safety, and experience of care. The fellow serves as a VPIT (Virtual Provider in Triage) Operations Director, gaining leadership experience coordinating, managing, and continuously optimizing a telehealth service across multiple emergency department sites. The fellow also contributes to operational oversight of Virtual Urgent Care and SCDC Virtual Emergency Triage services. Each fellow designs and launches a new telehealth service from concept to implementation, including service design, workflow development, pro forma creation, stakeholder engagement, and executive-level pitching. Fellows lead scholarly work supporting digital transformation in emergency medicine and are expected to present at one regional and one national conference; publication in peer-reviewed journals is encouraged. The fellow also serves as lead instructor for the Emergency Medicine Telehealth Elective (EMED872), a two-week rotation for fourth-year medical students and interprofessional learners, overseeing orientation, teaching, clinical observation, and mentorship. Fellows host quarterly Journal Club and Strategic Workgroup sessions. Fellows provide hands-on clinical care at both MUSC Emergency Departments, totaling 752 clinical hours per year. They may moonlight above those required hours if other fellowship requirements are met. The optional second year provides the opportunity for formal administrative training and an MBA or MHA.
