About The Position

This is an Open Rank, Clinical Faculty Appointment (CFA) position in General Internal Medicine. The role involves providing clinical expertise in patient care management and creating a suitable teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students in Internal Medicine. The Assistant Professor must be fully ambulatory with excellent manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and visual/auditory acuity. They should possess strong analytical skills for patient assessment and care advice, along with emotional and psychological stability for compassionate patient and family management. Responsibilities include participating in clinical research studies, independently evaluating new patients, initiating referrals, and managing follow-up care. Clinical procedures will align with standard patient care practices.

Requirements

Fully ambulatory.
Excellent bilateral manual dexterity.
Good hand-eye coordination.
Visual and auditory acuity to perform the job functions.
Intelligent with outstanding analytical skills to make judgments regarding the patient’s medical problems and advise the patient on methods to improve their care.
Emotional and psychological stability so that he or she will be able to manage patients and their families compassionately and positively.
Ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to research.
Ability to instruct research support personnel in protocol implementation (orally or in writing).
Ability to complete grant application forms through oral dictation or the use of a computer and keyboard.
Requires budget development and analysis.
Requires traveling to sites outside of the Houston area.
Capable of providing complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations.
Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's specialty.
Requires standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communication.
Must be able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationships, including other physicians, staff, patients, and subordinates.
Ability to satisfy and maintain all requirements necessary to ensure the continued security and integrity of critical infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Provides clinical expertise in patient care management.
Provides an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students in the specialty of Internal Medicine.
Participates in developing clinical research studies.
Independently responsible for new patient evaluations, initiation of appropriate referrals, and follow-up as appropriate.
Clinical procedures will encompass those pertinent to delivering standard care to the patient.
Provide a balanced and integrated educational program in internal medicine for medical residents and students who rotate through the Department of General Internal Medicine.
Attend and participate in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences.
Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Department.
Develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities in keeping with the goals of the Department.
Seek appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical research.
Represent the Department of General Internal Medicine at local, regional, state, and national levels regarding the field of General Internal Medicine.
Practice clinical medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the American College of Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities.
Provide complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations.
Perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's specialty.
Develop and maintain a clinical practice for patients referred to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Provide physician staffing for the Department of General Internal Medicine at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other internists with the same level of training and experience.
Visually review for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all charge documents as per institutional policy.
Complete patient documentation for medical records within the time frames provided by institutional policy.
Correspond as appropriate in writing or telephone conversations with physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty.
Request appropriate consultations for patients by phone conversations or in writing to other physicians.
Typify a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, and students.
Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the Department.
Work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationships, including other physicians, staff, patients, and subordinates.
