About The Position

The Clinical Extern Coordinator is an integral member of the healthcare team, providing mentorship to Clinical Externs who are nursing students working as unregulated care providers in their respective units. The Clinical Extern Coordinator is responsible for the successful implementation of the Clinical Extern Program across multiple units of the hospital, by supporting Clinical Externs in their practice and integration into their unit in accordance with nursing professional standards and HHS policies, and in collaboration with the clinical teams. The Clinical Extern Coordinator guides and supports the Clinical Externs in providing high quality care for patients and families, while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience. The Clinical Extern Coordinator serves as a liaison and conduit between unit leadership, Professional Practice, , and Student Affairs.

Requirements

  • Current registration (in good standing) with the Ontario College of Physiotherapists or the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
  • Minimum of 2 years clinical experience in a hospital setting
  • Recent experience working in acute medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics and/or critical care
  • Recent preceptor/clinical instructor experience required (within the last two years)
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize problem-solving, clinical reasoning, critical-thinking and effective clinical decision making in an acute medical setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill related to assessment, treatment implementation and caseload management of adult, neonatal/pediatric and/or geriatric medicine patients; using rehabilitative and functional approaches to patient care
  • Current BLS certification
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively as part of an interprofessional team
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast paced environment
  • Demonstrated strong communication and organizational skills
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends

Nice To Haves

  • Clinical supervisory experience an asset (eg. with new employees/new graduates)
  • Affiliation with McMaster University School of Rehabilitation Science (eg Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct) or Clinical Lecturer) in the OT or PT Program is an asset
