About The Position

Provides education and infrastructure support to healthcare practitioners regarding bio-ethical issues.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree with a concentration in Health Care Ethics
  • Eight (8) years experience as a clinical ethics consultant and educator, including drafting and implementing clinical ethics policies

Responsibilities

  • Provides informal and formal clinical ethics consultation to provide assistance to patients, families, and practitioners involved in medical decision-making with difficult cases.
  • Develops and participates in monthly clinical ethics rounds in intensive care units to encourage dialogue and decision-making based on bio-ethical principles.
  • Provides clinical ethics education for faculty and staff to disseminate information regarding bio-ethical principals, practices, facilitating their implementation in the hospital setting.
  • Coordinates the policy sub-committee of the Institutional Ethics Committee to assure the integration of bio-ethical principals into the hospital’s policies and procedures dealing with patient care.
  • Coordinates the medical futility review process to ensure that the medical futility review process is conducted according to the Texas Advance Directives Act and the hospital’s policies.
  • Prepares, reviews, oversees all printed material on patient rights and clinical ethics to ensure that these materials are consistent with applicable state and federal regulatory guidelines and hospital policies.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
