About The Position

The Clinical Associate performs clinical and clerical support, providing basic technical clinical services and clerical support in the delivery of quality patient care as directed by licensed staff, physician, or mid-level practitioner. They perform basic clinical services relating to the care, cleanliness, safety, and comfort of patients. The Clinical Associate may be approved for phlebotomy tasks with proper certification, department need, and leadership consent. They will also be required to perform other department/unit specific tasks. The role involves exhibiting competent knowledge of EMR, assisting with chart audits, reviewing medical records and provider orders, updating demographics and insurances, answering phones, scheduling appointments, receiving/relaying messages, and inputting refill requests. Assistance with referrals, authorizations, and pre-authorizations is also required. The Clinical Associate orders department/unit supplies and equipment, stocks and organizes supplies, and collects patient assessment data (height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint/symptoms, current medications, etc.) for assessment by licensed staff. They process equipment between patients, operate and maintain general office equipment, monitor cleanliness of waiting and break rooms, and perform safety/environmental rounds. Transporting patients and assisting with maintaining regulatory compliance are also key functions. On monitored units, the Clinical Associate functions as a nursing assistant and monitor technician. Clinical Associates assigned to Clinical Transport provide basic patient care and function as a monitor technician. On non-monitored units, they may be approved for decentralized phlebotomy or removal of femoral arterial sheaths and nursing assistant duties based on patient population and VP consent. They provide support for department/unit staff scheduling and may review medical records for outstanding orders and notify nurses of stat orders and medication changes. As competencies are appropriate, they will manage admissions, transfers, and discharges, and coordinate patient flow. Scheduling patient therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, welcoming and assisting patients and visitors, and serving as the "face" of the unit are also part of the role. Excellent telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills are essential. They receive and screen incoming calls, route calls, and take messages accurately. They serve as a resource for department/unit software systems. Clinical Associates in Clinical Transport may monitor and interpret EKG rhythms and utilize a transportation algorithm. They observe cardiac monitors, interpret and document rhythm patterns, report arrhythmias, and apply monitoring equipment. They may also observe epilepsy monitoring video and report specific events. Competencies for phlebotomy include obtaining blood specimens, reviewing physician's orders, verifying nomenclature or lab tests, and processing specimens. Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Prior patient care experience is preferred.
  • If employee is working in a Critical Access Area, a Certified Nursing Assistant (N.A.) is required.
  • Must have successfully completed a N.A. course or successfully completed N.A. course with Carilion.
  • Successful completion of Monitor Technician courses through Carilion required if working in a monitored area.
  • Successful completion of phlebotomy and sheath courses through Carilion required if working in areas where the skill set is required.
  • AHA BLS-HCP required.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and team-working skills required.
  • Must be organized and self-motivated.
  • Must have knowledge of office procedure and equipment.
  • Must be able to attend required orientation classes during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm for the first 2 weeks. These classes are mandatory!

  • Assists with maintaining regulatory compliance (refrigerator, code cart checks, glucose meters, equipment room storage, etc.).
  • Provides basic nursing care and performs advanced technical skills according to established standards.
  • Acts as clerical support, receptionist, and unit resource in support of members of the unit health-care team.
  • On monitored units, functions as a nursing assistant and a monitor technician.
  • Assigned to Clinical Transport will provide basic patient care and function as a monitor technician.
  • On non-Monitored units, may be approved with de-centralized phlebotomy or removal of femoral arterial sheaths and nursing assistant based upon patient population and VP consent.
  • Provides support for department/unit staff scheduling, including lunch assignments.
  • May review medical record for outstanding orders and notifies nurse of stat orders and medication changes.
  • Manages admissions, transfers, and discharges as competencies are appropriate.
  • Coordinates patient flow into/out of area using department/unit specific software and Intranet.
  • Schedules patient therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
  • Welcomes and assists patients and visitors and assists with registration.
  • Serves as “face” of the unit, adheres to dress code and exhibits service excellence behaviors at all times.
  • Demonstrates excellent telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills when answering phones and interacting with patients, visitors, physicians, and other health professionals.

  • In Clinical Transport, may be assigned to transports patients independently monitoring the patient's condition en route and during procedures.

  • Utilizes transportation algorithm to determine appropriate follow-up for emergent and /or urgent patient needs.
  • Transports patients, supplies specimens and equipment within the facility.
  • Collaborates with the RN, physician, and other clinical disciplines to meet the needs of the patient who requires transportation between area of care within the hospital.
  • Continuously observes EKG monitors and patient status.
  • Maintains thorough knowledge of Clinical information systems for data entry and retrieval.
  • Inputs, maintains, and updates monitoring transport database.
  • Observes cardiac monitors as assigned.
  • Interprets and documents rhythm patterns on a routine basis.
  • Reports arrhythmias and significant rate and rhythm changes to the RN.
  • Completes documentation/placement on monitor flowsheet and files in paper chart.
  • Applies monitoring equipment to patients and ensures correct functioning.
  • Observes epilepsy monitoring video and reports specific events.
  • Obtains blood specimens using methods appropriate to the age and condition of the patient (Venipuncture, finger puncture, or heel puncture).
  • Reviews physician's order for medical necessity and/or ABN information.
  • Verifies questionable nomenclature or ordered lab tests.
  • Processes specimens and prepares for delivery to laboratory.
  • Contributes to the orientation and career development of others.
