The Clinical Associate performs clinical and clerical support, providing basic technical clinical services and clerical support in the delivery of quality patient care as directed by licensed staff, physician, or mid-level practitioner. They perform basic clinical services relating to the care, cleanliness, safety, and comfort of patients. The Clinical Associate may be approved for phlebotomy tasks with proper certification, department need, and leadership consent. This role is within the 9 MTN ICU, a 12-bed unit specializing in the care of Trauma/Neurosurgery patients, including those requiring Epilepsy Monitoring post-operatively. They also serve as the alternate unit for operative stroke patients and other surgery patients, including general surgery. The position is full-time, working the night shift with every other weekend and rotating holidays. The Clinical Associate will also be required to perform other department/unit specific tasks. They exhibit competent knowledge of EMR and assist with chart audits, review medical records and provider orders, update demographics and insurances, answer phones, schedule appointments, receive/relay messages, and input refill requests. They assist with referrals, authorizations, and pre-authorization as directed. They order department/unit supplies and equipment, and stock/organize supplies. They collect patient assessment data, including height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint/symptoms, and current medications for assessment by licensed staff. They process equipment between patients, operate and maintain general office equipment, and monitor the cleanliness of waiting and break rooms, performing safety/environmental rounds. They transport patients and assist with maintaining regulatory compliance. They provide basic nursing care and perform advanced technical skills according to established standards, acting as clerical support, receptionist, and unit resource. On monitored units, they function as a nursing assistant and a monitor technician. Clinical Associates assigned to Clinical Transport provide basic patient care and function as a monitor technician. On non-monitored units, they may be approved for decentralized phlebotomy or removal of femoral arterial sheaths and nursing assistant duties based on patient population and VP consent. They provide support for department/unit staff scheduling. They may review medical records for outstanding orders and notify the nurse of stat orders and medication changes. As competencies are appropriate, they will manage admissions, transfers, and discharges, and coordinate patient flow. They schedule patient therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, welcome and assist patients and visitors, and assist with registration. They serve as the “face” of the unit, adhering to dress code and exhibiting service excellence behaviors. They demonstrate excellent telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills. They receive and screen incoming calls, route calls, and take messages accurately. They serve as a resource for department/unit software systems. Clinical Associates in Clinical Transport may monitor and interpret EKG rhythms and utilize a transportation algorithm. They observe cardiac monitors, interpret and document rhythm patterns, report arrhythmias and significant changes to the RN, and apply monitoring equipment. They observe epilepsy monitoring video and report specific events. Competencies for phlebotomy include obtaining blood specimens, reviewing physician's orders, verifying nomenclature or ordered lab tests, and processing specimens.
