About The Position
The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at The University of Alabama invites applications for an Assistant, Associate, or Full Clinical Professor to serve as Director of the Speech and Hearing Center (SHC). This is a renewable, non-tenure-track clinical faculty position beginning January 1, 2027. The rank offered will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. The Clinic Director provides administrative and clinical leadership for the on-campus Speech and Hearing Center, an accredited training facility that serves the surrounding community and provides supervised clinical education for graduate students in speech-language pathology and audiology. The Director ensures that all operations adhere to American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) standards, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines, Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) requirements, and applicable federal, state, and University regulations.
Requirements
- Earned master's or doctoral degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders (Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology) from a CAA-accredited program
- Current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP or CCC-A) or eligibility to obtain CCC within one year of hire
- Minimum of five (5) years of post-master's or post-doctoral clinical experience
- Demonstrated managerial, supervisory, or administrative experience in a clinical or academic setting
- Thorough knowledge of ASHA ethical and professional standards, CAPCSD standards, CFCC certification standards, HIPAA regulations, and ICD/CPT coding
- Ability to teach at the graduate level and mentor students in clinical practice
- Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, and leadership skills
Nice To Haves
- Advanced clinical degree (M.S./M.A., Au.D., SLP-D or equivalent)
- Ten (10) or more years of post-master's or doctoral clinical experience
- Prior experience as a clinic director, clinical coordinator, or clinical education administrator in an academic or medical setting
- Experience with clinic billing, revenue cycle management, and compliance (CPT/ICD coding)
- Record of clinical scholarship, program development, or community-engaged practice
- Experience with graduate program accreditation processes (CAA)
Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily clinical operations of the Speech and Hearing Center, ensuring excellence in service delivery and compliance with all relevant standards and regulations
- Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures and clinic policies
- Manage SHC contractual service agreements, billing practices, and revenue-cycle compliance in accordance with Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding standards
- Supervise and evaluate Speech and Hearing Center staff, including clinical supervisors and support personnel, in collaboration with the Department Chair
- Prepare and manage the SHC budget in collaboration with the Department Chair & department budget committee
- Ensure compliance with Council on Academic Accreditation of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) standards and Council for Clinical Certification (CFCC) requirements
- Maintain and update clinic policies in response to changes in ASHA, CAA, and regulatory requirements
- Serve as the primary point of contact for external partnerships, community agencies, and contractual service providers
- Lead Graduate Student Clinic Orientation and additional training as needed
- Prepare graduate clinic syllabi including SLH 508, 516, 526, 528, 536
- Provide direct supervision of graduate clinicians in accordance with ASHA and CAA requirements
- Teach one (1) course per semester (fall and spring) in speech-language pathology, audiology, or a related area, consistent with the candidate's area of expertise and departmental needs
- Collaborate with faculty to integrate clinical and didactic curriculum
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in evidence-based clinical practice across a range of communication disorders
- Maintain CCC-SLP or CCC-A certification in good standing, maintain state licensure requirements, and fulfill continuing education requirements
- Monitor and document clinic outcomes and student learning outcomes for accreditation and departmental reporting
- Prepare materials for and participate in CAA site visits and program reviews
- Implement and evaluate quality improvement initiatives to enhance clinical training and service delivery
- Ensure HIPAA-compliant documentation, records management, and data security practices
- Foster relationships with community partners, referral sources, and stakeholders to expand clinic services and externship opportunities
- Represent the Speech and Hearing Center at departmental, college, and professional events
- Support grant writing and resource development efforts relevant to the SHC as appropriate
