About The Position

The Clinical Assistant II performs various duties under the supervision and/or direction of a Department Assistant Nurse Manager. This role functions in three principal areas: Clerical/Patient Registration (receptionist, unit clerk, or patient registration duties, acting as a communication hub), Technician (operating an Electrocardiograph machine to record heart activity for diagnosis), and Phlebotomist (collecting blood and other patient samples from the Emergency Department population). A Clinical Assistant – II functions in all three areas and maintains associated competencies, providing a direct link between the patient and testing services with interpersonal contact and technical competence. The role also involves performing other trained technical skills.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or G.E.D.
  • Ability to pass a medical terminology exam upon hire or have passed a medical terminology class in the past 2 years.
  • CPR certification or ability to acquire.
  • Computer knowledge or willingness to learn computer skills.
  • Previous acute bedside hospital experience as Clinical Assistant, Nurse Aide, or EMT within the past 2 years.
  • Ability to perform detailed assignments and work under pressure.
  • Possesses a high level of interpersonal communication skills to relate to patients, hospital staff and visitors.
  • As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.

Responsibilities

  • Performs receptionist duties, unit clerk laboratory duties, or patient registration duties.
  • Functions as the center of communication for areas assigned.
  • Operates an Electrocardiograph machine to record electromotive variations and impulses of the heart for use in the diagnosis of heart disorder.
  • Collects blood and other patient samples from Emergency Department patient population.
  • Maintains associated competencies in all three functional areas.
  • Provides the essential direct link between the patient and testing service both in providing interpersonal contact and technical competence in obtaining appropriate patient samples.
  • Performs other technical skills as trained.
