About The Position

ATA Services Inc. is currently seeking to hire a Part-Time Clinical Abstractor to work on a temporary assignment. The New Mexico Department of Health Maternal Health Program is seeking a Records Abstractor to support the Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC). The MMRC reviews maternal deaths occurring during pregnancy or within one year after pregnancy to identify pregnancy-related factors, contributing circumstances, and opportunities to prevent future deaths. The Records Abstractor will review medical records and other available sources, accurately extract relevant information, and prepare objective case summaries to support MMRC case reviews. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to a critical public health initiative focused on understanding and preventing maternal deaths in New Mexico.

Requirements

  • Nursing or clinical experience in obstetric, prenatal, or postpartum care.
  • Knowledge of pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, and factors affecting maternal outcomes.
  • Experience reviewing medical records and extracting relevant information.
  • Strong computer, data entry, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to navigate electronic medical record systems.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and confidentiality requirements.
  • Commitment to health equity and understanding of factors contributing to health disparities.
  • Ability to work objectively and without bias when reviewing sensitive cases.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with MMRIA or similar public health, mortality review, surveillance, or medical data systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working with New Mexico communities of color.

Responsibilities

  • Review and abstract information from medical records and other sources.
  • Enter accurate case information into the Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA).
  • Prepare comprehensive, objective narrative case summaries.
  • Identify missing, conflicting, or unclear information requiring follow-up.
  • Assist with identifying potential key informants for interviews.
  • Participate in staff and MMRC case review meetings.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Abstractor, MMRC Coordinator, and multidisciplinary team.
  • Complete required training related to maternal health, health equity, implicit bias, and HIPAA.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality, accuracy, consistency, and attention to detail.
