The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing nursing care adapted to individual patient needs based on the nursing process, which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This position is accountable and responsible for the planning and providing comprehensive outpatient care for patients/families being cared by for the breast surgery physicians of the Cancer Institute. The nurse's understanding of the pathophysiology of cancer as well as the major treatment modalities for breast cancer enables her/him to participate fully in all phases of care for the breast surgical patient and their significant support system. The nurse is responsible for patient navigation: triage, testing, symptom management, patient/family education, and pre/post-op care. The nurse functions as a practice liaison with surgical and radiation oncology services to optimize OR and ASC utilization. The nurse is responsible for identifying special needs of patients and making referrals to other healthcare professionals to facilitate holistic care of each patient. The nurse practices in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act in the state of employment, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the ANA scope and standards of practice.
