Clinic Lab Assistant

Trinity Health•Clinton, IA

About The Position

The Clinic Lab Assistant collects blood samples from patients ranging from infants to geriatric patients using venous and capillary techniques. The role uses the Laboratory Information System to activate, order, and result laboratory orders and tests. It also educates patients on proper urine, stool, and sputum specimen collection; reviews provider orders for accuracy and occasionally contacts providers’ offices to obtain orders; and processes specimens according to requirements, including centrifuging, separating, and storing them at appropriate temperatures to preserve sample integrity and testing acceptability. The position prepares specimens for transfer to reference laboratories, completes transfer paperwork, and ensures STAT specimens are processed and transported promptly, including arranging a STAT courier when needed. Under the guidance and supervision of an MLT or MT, the assistant performs waived and moderately complex CLIA testing in hematology, urinalysis, and serology. The role maintains accurate temperature-monitoring, quality-control, and daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance records.
