About The Position

Within the context of a patient/client and family-centred framework and continuum-based care model and in accordance with established standards of professional practice and the vision, values and policies of the organization, assesses patients for optimal nutrition support utilizing advanced clinical nutrition knowledge. Provides recommendations to the medical team regarding route of nutrition support, i.e. enteral vs. parenteral, and composition of most appropriate nutrition support and vitamin and mineral supplementation, based on the current practice guidelines and best practices. Develops nutrition support regimes and monitors clients on a regular basis for continued appropriateness, tolerance, and safety. Provides education sessions related to nutrition support for health care professional including students and interns from all professions and acts as a clinical resource for dietitians, students, and other health care professionals. Initiates the development and participates in nutrition-related research projects. Participates in the development of nutrition-related policies, procedures, and guidelines for designated areas.

Requirements

  • Current full registration as a Dietitian with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC).
  • Two (2) years' recent, related clinical experience in a medical/surgical care setting.
  • Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) from the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated competency in designing, compounding, dispensing and administering enteral nutrition (formerly know as Restricted Activity A and C).
  • Knowledge of clinical dietetic theory and practice within a client/family centred model for care.
  • Knowledge of enteral and parenteral nutrition, feeding tube access and delivery methods.
  • Knowledge of the metabolic basis of nutritional care.
  • Knowledge of the standards of practice and guidelines for clinical practitioners established by the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC).
  • Knowledge of assessing clients with multi-system nutritional problems.
  • Knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care.
  • Knowledge of research process and methodology.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement nutrition care plans in relation to client/family priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess client responses to care plan, and to respond appropriately.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events, deal with conflict situations, and problem-solve and to think critically.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop procedure protocols, manuals, and practice guidelines within a program.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (both verbally and in writing) with and deal effectively with clients and their families, co-workers, physicians, other health care staff and staff of external agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.
  • Demonstrated physical ability to carry out the duties of the job.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of equipment and supplies appropriate to the clinical area.
  • Demonstrated skill in techniques appropriate to the clinical area.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including the ability to effectively use a computerized client care information system and Internet, word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
