About The Position

Paper Trails, a "Best Place to Work in Maine" winner, is a payroll, HCM and HR firm in Kennebunk serving small and mid sized businesses across Maine and New England. We are not a call center and we are not a national processor. Our clients know their consultant by name, and our consultants know their clients' businesses. We are looking for someone who is genuinely hard to find: a person who understands payroll and compliance, who is fluent with technology, and whose instinct when they see a slow manual process is to figure out a better way and then go build it.

Requirements

• Understands payroll and compliance.
• Fluent with technology.
• Instinct to improve slow manual processes and build better solutions.
• Figure it outer: digs in when encountering new challenges.
• Self-taught software skills.
• Experience building imports, reports, spreadsheet models, or automations.
• Experimenting with AI tools.
• Ability to explain complicated rules clearly.
• Comfortable changing established processes.
• Experience from payroll, HRIS, benefits administration, implementation, or a similar field, where client or employee outcomes were owned.
• Working knowledge of payroll tax, multi-state payroll, and wage and hour compliance matters, or the demonstrated ability to learn regulatory material quickly and apply it correctly.

Nice To Haves

• Direct isolved experience.
• FPC or CPP certification.

Responsibilities

• Own a portfolio of about 100 to 150 clients and be responsible for getting their payrolls right.
• Eliminate repetitive work through custom imports, automated verifications, AI assisted processing, and smarter configuration of our platform.
• Move clients onto self service where it makes them faster and coach them through the change.
• Share what works with the rest of the team.
• Have real conversations with business owners and HR leaders about compliance, their workforce data, and where technology can actually solve a problem for them.
• Recommend solutions, sometimes disagree, and know when to point them somewhere else.
