Client Software Architect

External•Durham, NC

About The Position

Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions is hiring a Client Software Architect to lead end-to-end architecture and solution delivery for retail platforms and client projects. The role combines architecture leadership, platform infrastructure and capability development, client engagement, partner integrations, hands-on software development, and practical use of AI-assisted development tools. The architect owns the lifecycle from discovery and design through implementation and operational readiness, guiding both exploratory Discovery Track work and production Delivery Track work. The position includes designing scalable cloud-native platform infrastructure and core capabilities such as APIs, microservices, data pipelines, and shared services. It also involves translating client needs into validated architectures and working implementations; leading workshops, technical presentations, and approvals; and maintaining traceability from business requirements through implementation and operations. The architect owns integration architecture across partner ecosystems, defining API contracts, data models, authentication, error handling, and versioning strategies. They contribute actively through coding, prototyping, code reviews, and implementation of critical components, primarily using technologies such as Java/Spring Boot, TypeScript, React or Vue, Docker, and Kubernetes. They also establish architecture standards and quality practices, mentor engineers and architects, and contribute to platform and portfolio strategy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 8 years of professional software development experience, including recent hands-on coding and prototyping in modern technology stacks.
  • At least 5 years designing cloud-native, microservices, or event-driven architectures using Azure or equivalent cloud platforms.
  • Strong experience building platform infrastructure and scalable backend systems.
  • Proven experience owning end-to-end solution delivery, including design, implementation, and post-release operational accountability for medium-to-large projects.
  • Experience with partner integrations such as payments, SaaS APIs, loyalty, inventory, or authentication providers.
  • Hands-on experience building prototypes or reference implementations to validate architecture and solution feasibility.
  • Expertise in API-first design, including REST/OpenAPI.
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases (SQL/NoSQL).
  • Solid understanding of containerization, CI/CD, and Kubernetes-based delivery pipelines.
  • Practical experience with generative AI and AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or Cursor.
  • Excellent stakeholder communication skills, including facilitating workshops, presenting technical solutions, and collaborating across business and engineering teams.
  • Proven leadership in mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, and enforcing architecture governance.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong retail platform domain knowledge, including POS systems, store operations, or payment processing.
  • Certifications such as Azure Solutions Architect, AWS Solutions Architect, or equivalent.
  • Experience with API gateways or integration platforms such as Azure APIM, Kong, Apigee, MuleSoft, or Boomi.
  • Understanding of API security and compliance, including OAuth 2.0/OIDC, JWT, and PCI.
  • Familiarity with formal specifications such as OpenAPI, AsyncAPI, and JSON Schema for contract-driven development.
  • Background in distributed systems, microservices architecture, and infrastructure as code.
  • Experience leading Dual-Track Agile processes and translating Discovery Track outcomes into actionable delivery backlog items.
  • Experience contributing to platform strategy, reusable assets, and API-first designs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end solution architecture across discovery, design, delivery, and operational readiness for platform and client solutions.
  • Design and build platform infrastructure and core capabilities to support emerging product requirements and use cases.
  • Produce and maintain architectural artifacts, including ADRs, interface contracts, data-flow and sequencing diagrams, infrastructure specifications, migration and rollback plans, and traceability matrices.
  • Define and enforce architecture standards, integration patterns, and non-functional requirements.
  • Write production code for critical platform features, infrastructure components, client solutions, and new product capabilities.
  • Build reusable platform patterns, shared services, and API-first designs that enable extensibility and rapid feature development.
  • Lead client-facing architecture activities, including workshops, technical presentations, solution approvals, and stakeholder alignment.
  • Lead Discovery Track work, including rapid prototyping, feasibility validation, and stakeholder alignment.
  • Translate discovery outcomes into structured delivery backlogs and technical specifications while preserving design intent and architecture standards.
  • Own integration architecture across third-party partner ecosystems and govern consistency across partner integrations and internal product lines.
  • Define authentication strategies, error handling, API versioning, API contracts, and data models for integrations.
  • Participate in design reviews, architecture quality gates, release sign-offs, code reviews, and hands-on delivery of complex features.
  • Identify and mitigate architecture risks related to compatibility, data integrity, scalability, partner dependencies, backward compatibility, and compliance constraints.
  • Mentor and upskill engineers and architects on design practices, infrastructure patterns, AI-assisted development, Dual-Track workflows, and platform best practices.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and platform strategy by identifying reusable assets, shared APIs, automation opportunities, infrastructure needs, and investment gaps.
