About The Position

The Veterinary Diagnostic Lab Receiving/Sample Processing section is accepting applications for a Clerk III. The ISU VDL is a full-service veterinary diagnostic laboratory engaged in missions of service, teaching and research on a daily basis. The laboratory processes over 100,000 submissions from veterinarians and researchers annually. The successful applicant will work primarily with animal specimens (tissues, blood, serum, oral fluids, feces, urine, etc), preparing them to be tested in the ancillary laboratories. This position will also be responsible for entering client-based information into the laboratory information management software.

Requirements

  • Any combination of related clerical office experience, related undergraduate education, and/or post high school clerical training that is the equivalent to two years of full-time employment.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.

  • Experience working in a lab, research, or medical office.

  • Degree in a Science related field.

Responsibilities

  • Entry and verification of data provided by clients – owner, location, species, ID numbers, etc. – into ISU LIMS program.
  • Edit and archive scanned documents to ensure readability and accuracy.
  • Investigate all irregularities in submission and create Corrective Action/Preventative Action (CA/PA) for improvement opportunities.
  • Inform testing labs of any discrepancies and make corrections.
  • Receive, triage and open packages of biological samples - tissues, blood, serum, oral fluids, feces, urine, environmental, etc. – submitted for testing and disease diagnosis.
  • Order and package samples into a secondary container; record any additional information provided.
  • Examine submission forms to verify that number of samples match the number of tubes in the packages.
  • Determination of sample suitability for test requests.
  • Assign accession numbers to samples, secondary containers and corresponding submission forms.
  • Transfer serum, oral fluids, etc. to standard sized tubes prior to transfer of samples to labs.
  • Examine submission form for tests requested; assign department and correct case coordinator.
  • Store samples appropriately until testing can be performed.
