Clean Energy & Innovation Intern

EquinixDallas, TX

About The Position

During your Summer Internship with us, you will collaborate on work that impacts the world and be surrounded by endless opportunities to learn new skills and grow in varied directions. If you’re a forward-thinking, hard-working college student who loves to learn and wants to make a positive impact on the world while growing your career, join us and help shape the digital world. At Equinix, energy is a strategic enabler of our global digital infrastructure. Our Energy team partners across the business to help ensure resilient, scalable, and cost-effective power for one of the world’s largest data center platforms—spanning the full energy landscape, from grid infrastructure and conventional generation to emerging low-carbon solutions—while continuing to advance decarbonization through clean energy and innovation. In this role, you’ll act as an energy “scout”—researching emerging and established energy technologies that could help power future data centers and turning your findings into actionable outputs to inform strategy and decision making. This internship is a great fit for a student who is passionate about energy systems and enjoys structuring complex technical research into practical recommendations.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, in your penultimate year of a Bachelor’s or Master’s program
  • Majoring in Engineering, Energy Systems, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Strong interest in energy technologies and innovation for critical infrastructure
  • Demonstrated ability to research, synthesize technical information, and communicate clearly to mixed technical/non-technical audiences
  • Expected graduation between December 2026 – May 2027
  • Available to work full-time for the internship duration
  • Comfortable using Excel and PowerPoint, Smartsheet, Power BI or other analytical tools
  • Detail-oriented with strong communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with energy technology evaluation through coursework, labs, research, or internships (generation, storage, transmission & distribution, microgrids, demand response, renewables, nuclear/SMRs, geothermal, and thermal solutions)
  • Exposure to energy delivery (virtual PPAs vs retail delivered PPAs), contracting structures (e.g., PPA vs capex/ownership models) and siting/interconnection concepts (behind-the-meter vs front-of-the-meter)
  • Familiarity with technology readiness concepts, feasibility analysis, or building implementation/pilot plans
  • Comfort with basic quantitative analysis (assumptions, back-of-the-envelope modeling, sensitivity checks) and data visualization
  • Interest in data centers, power infrastructure, and the energy transition

Responsibilities

  • Research and identify energy technologies and solutions that could meet data center power needs—along with how they are typically deployed, sited, and contracted
  • Develop concise technology snapshots outlining use case, maturity, cost estimates, key risks, and leading vendors/partners
  • Create SWOT and feasibility assessments tailored to data center constraints
  • Evaluate commercial and delivery structures (e.g., power purchase agreements vs capex/ownership models) and siting considerations (behind-the-meter vs front-of-the-meter), including implications for interconnection, timelines, and cost
  • Build a simple evaluation framework to prioritize technologies and solution pathways for deeper diligence and potential pilots
  • Draft an implementation roadmap for selected solutions and synthesize findings into executive-ready materials

Benefits

  • Meaningful exposure to energy challenges at global scale—where technology choices can materially impact cost, carbon, and resilience.
  • Learn how large-scale data center power needs shape requirements for a wide range of energy technologies and infrastructure
  • Work with energy, sustainability, finance, and engineering stakeholders to turn research into actionable recommendations
  • Gain experience building structured assessments (SWOT, feasibility, and roadmaps) that support investment and piloting decisions
  • Participate in Equinix’s global intern development and learning programs
