About The Position

This role involves working within a team of Outside Machinists to achieve production standards for time, quality, and safety, in alignment with company policies. The machinist will be responsible for installing, disassembling, fault-finding, repairing, and re-assembling shipboard equipment. Key tasks include precise measurement, safe rigging, quality inspection, adherence to procedures, and contributing to team development and process improvements. The position requires a strong commitment to safety, quality, and timely vessel delivery, following Austal guidelines and NAVSEA standards. Travel to off-site locations and adherence to the Off-Site Temporary Assignment Policy are mandatory.

Requirements

  • Comparable trade experience (5 or more years) OR 2 years of experience in shipbuilding OR education in the trade comparable to apprenticeship OR 1-year minimum work experience as a B-class outside machinist at Austal.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of shaft alignment techniques including laser alignment systems and dial indicator alignment processes.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of machining procedures.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude required.
  • Knowledge of ship terminology.
  • Proven ability to interpret engineering drawings.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate all fixed and non-fixed machinery.
  • Ability to set up machinery to meet flatness tolerance requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret job specifications.
  • Ability to perform work on marine vessels.
  • Must be able to follow directions and work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and measure using the metric system.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities.
  • Must be able to travel to off-site work locations.
  • Must follow Austal Off-Site Temporary Assignment Policy (SUP270).
  • Must have full set of personal tools.
  • 18 years of age or older at time of application.
  • Able to provide proof of US Person Status.
  • No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date.
  • No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date.
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen.
  • Willing to submit to a background check.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DBIDS and or any other clearance or access that may be required if deemed necessary in the scope of your position responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Install equipment on board vessels in a safe and productive manner.
  • Disassemble, fault find, repair, and re-assemble shipboard equipment as directed by the supervisor.
  • Mark and measure to close tolerances using Austal calibrated equipment.
  • Safely rig equipment following all OSHA requirements.
  • Inspection of work, identification of potential problems, and initiation of corrective actions.
  • Increase awareness of Quality procedures within the department.
  • Ensure adherence to correct work procedures.
  • Continuously improve communications and flexibility within the team.
  • Develop other team members' skill levels.
  • Build pride of workmanship and quality through on-the-job training.
  • Contribute towards innovation / productivity improvements.
  • Assist in the control of waste elimination (e.g., materials, consumables).
  • Assist supervisor to maintain control of department equipment and its maintenance.
  • Work towards the team goal of delivering the vessel on time.
  • Follow Austal guidelines and procedures.
  • Ensure work area is left clean, all equipment and tools are stowed away safely and protected against damage.
  • Perform and execute work in compliance with NAVSEA STD Items.
  • Must be able to travel to off-site work locations.
  • Must follow Austal Off-Site Temporary Assignment Policy (SUP270).
