About The Position

The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) is seeking a Claims Technician who will deliver prompt and professional Unemployment Insurance (UI) services by responding to claimant and employer inquiries, reviewing and processing initial and continued claims, resolving eligibility issues, and ensuring accurate documentation and timely benefit payments. This role gathers and enters claim information, interviews customers to determine needed actions, updates personal and payment details, meets call quality standards, and maintains compliance with federal and state requirements. The Claims Technician also supports daily administrative tasks, processes mail, assists with special check requests, maintains organized records, and performs responsibilities related to the FTI Offset Program while contributing to an efficient and customer focused team. Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of claims examination and processing, accounting and cash management principles, and office operations.
  • Strong customer service, data entry, and communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft software (e.g., Excel and Word), OneDrive, and/or similar software.
  • Ability to perform detailed work related to the tracking and resolution of claims and employer charges.
  • Ability to collect and analyze information to make determinations.
  • Ability to prepare and reconcile reports.
  • Ability to record and enter information into a database.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries and provide technical assistance.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
  • Must successfully obtain and demonstrate requisite skill set (knowledge, skills and abilities) for position and meet the certification requirements, as defined by DOL, to become certified as an agency Unemployment Claims Investigator no later than one year from the commencement of the training program to remain in position.
  • Must possess a valid Virginia Driver's License to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.
