About The Position

The Claims Examiner I provides all aspects of claims examination, from coverage verification to closure, for auto and general liability coverages issued by the TAC Risk Management Pool (TAC RMP) as set forth in the Claims Standards & Procedures. Requires frequent and professional communication, both written and verbal, with Risk Management Services (RMS) and other TAC staff, TAC RMP members, and vendors.

Requirements

• High School Diploma required
• 3 years of experience in claims adjusting.
• A minimum of 1 year of claims adjusting experience of auto and liability claims.
• Texas Department of Insurance all-lines adjuster’s license required.
• Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to relate to persons from varying economic, educational, and cultural backgrounds required.
• High degree of professionalism in representing TAC in significant contacts with elected officials, members, and others required.
• Proficiency in the use of personal computer and Microsoft Office.
• Must have or develop proficiency in department’s risk information management system software (RMIS).
• Excellent time management, attention to detail and record keeping required.
• Must be able to function in a fast-paced environment with a high degree of efficiency, accuracy and the ability to prioritize tasks and requests.
• Must function independently with minimal supervision.
• Must have a good working knowledge of auto and general liability coverages and maintain current understanding of liability issues under Texas law.
• Valid Texas driver’s license and a good driving record required; must be able to drive.
• This is a member facing role and as a requirement for this position, you agree to sign the TAC Photo/Video Release Form allowing the use of your picture, likeness, image, and/or voice recording videos, and other posts to TAC social media accounts, webpages, promotional, and educational materials.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Risk Management or related field preferred
• Associate in Claims (AIC) preferred.
• Knowledge of Texas Tort Claims Act and governmental immunities preferred.
• Good working knowledge and experience handling auto subrogation claims preferred.
• Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Responsibilities

• Investigate coverage and assess liability issues based on review of applicable coverage document, endorsements, laws and related information for TAC RMP’s Auto and General Liability coverages.
• Assess vehicle damage and control the damage repair process; make total loss determinations; evaluate injury claims; and actively manage independent appraiser relationships.
• Recommend and supervise defense counsel, develop effective and responsible defense strategies, negotiate settlements, and make payment recommendations within settlement and payment authority.
• Initiate and monitor cost recovery action as appropriate, including subrogation, restitution, and salvage proceeds.
• Attend claims-related events such as mediations, arbitrations, settlement conferences, and trials.
• Attend training and education courses and represent TAC and TAC RMP at TAC sponsored and TAC-affiliated member organization conferences.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
