Requirements

The ideal candidate demonstrates the ability to adapt to a wide range of interpreting needs and possesses a high degree of linguistic, cognitive, and technical proficiency.
They have a strong understanding of Deaf Culture and are skilled in working across the full spectrum of sign modalities, from American Sign Language (ASL) to Signed English.
The candidate exhibits exceptional attention to detail and accuracy, outstanding listening skills, and a thorough command of English grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation.
They possess strong receptive and expressive communication abilities, accurately conveying the speaker’s message, intent, tone, register, and content between languages.
The ideal candidate exercises sound professional judgment when accepting assignments based on skill level, subject matter familiarity, and the diversity of consumers and settings.
They work effectively with consumers while adhering to industry-specific Codes of Ethics, Standards of Professional Practice, and confidentiality requirements.
Additionally, they build and maintain positive professional relationships with students, faculty, staff, campus officials, and guests across classroom settings, campus events, and other functions.
The candidate communicates diplomatically and effectively with colleagues and stakeholders, collaborates closely as part of a team, and fosters cooperative working relationships through a positive, respectful attitude.
They consistently demonstrate reliability by reporting to work on time, prepared to perform all assigned duties, and possess a strong working knowledge of standard workplace practices.

Sign language interpreters are required to complete an Interpreter Training Program (ITP).

Responsibilities

Sign language interpreters facilitate the communication and integration of deaf and hearing impaired, or otherwise disabled students and consumers (including faculty, staff and university guests) into the classroom, other instructional settings, and into the university community either by way of American Sign language (ASL), or Signed English, Transliteration (a manual, oral or tactile system of communication.)
Sign language interpreters provide communication access by conveying verbal information into a mode of communication best understood by the deaf, hearing impaired and/or otherwise disabled students, faculty, staff and university guests.
Work with students in the Interpreting program, viewing their performance and providing feedback.
