About The Position

GFT is seeking a Civil Highway Engineer/Railroad Specialist to join their Practice or CBG Team in Schaumburg, IL. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at the Schaumburg, IL office. GFT's Transportation team focuses on transformative projects that enhance transportation infrastructure and improve community connectivity, excelling in resilient, sustainable design and construction for modern, multimodal roadway systems. The Schaumburg, IL office is looking for this specialist to join their growing team of roadway, highway, structural, transit, rail, and intermodal designers and construction inspectors, specifically as a roadway/highway Railroad Specialist on Phase I and Phase II projects. The position is a full-time role (40 hours a week) within the highway division, part of a Program Management role, working in the IDOT District One office. The successful candidate will perform various tasks related to roadway and railroad projects, working with a team leader and completing certain tasks independently.

Requirements

• Minimum 5 years of related, in-field experience, including work directly or as a consultant for the Illinois Tollway, Illinois DOT, Chicago DOT, Cook County Department of Transportation & Highways, or local counties and municipalities, and with Federally funded projects.
• Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or similar field from an ABET accredited university.
• E.I.T. Certification.
• Possess strong technical skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work well in a team environment on multi-disciplinary projects.
• Possess an Illinois Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

• A good understanding of OpenRoads.
• Previous experience on projects with railroad coordination and inspection of roadway/railroad work in the field.
• Previous highway, drainage, construction inspection, track, traffic signal, and/or lighting experience.
• Background in preliminary engineering or development of detailed plans and specifications.

Responsibilities

• Perform various tasks including roadway plan drawings, quantities, geometric design, pavement marking/signing, drainage design, traffic studies, traffic signal design, public involvement, project reports, specifications, cost estimates, roadway lighting, and other related tasks.
• Analyze information and data to perform routine design tasks.
• Make decisions independently on engineering problems and methods.
• Be responsible for accuracy of engineering design and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.
• Review design options and document findings from the design team.
• Manage workload and any changes in project schedule or scope or additional services.
