Civil Estimator - Industrial

Kiewit•Lenexa, KS
•Onsite

About The Position

Kiewit is seeking a Civil Estimator to support the Component Take-Off (CTO) process and ongoing estimates for industrial facilities. The role leads weekly calls with onsite construction teams, reviews issued engineering deliverables, and helps ensure quantities are tracked accurately for project controls. It also involves working with engineering and construction teams to review and interpret contract documents—including specifications, drawings, and reference information—and develop comprehensive cost estimates. The estimator supports estimates and CTO work across design-bid-build, design/build, and EPC execution methodologies. The position works with multidisciplinary teams to turn engineering deliverables into accurate quantity components that support construction execution, scheduling, and project controls. The role is office-based, preferably in Lenexa, Kansas, with some location flexibility for Lone Tree, Colorado depending on applicant qualifications and experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience demonstrating advanced estimating expertise.
  • At least 4 years of experience estimating industrial EPC or construction projects.
  • Experience coordinating efforts on complex, multidisciplinary projects.
  • Strong analytical skills, exceptional attention to detail, and ability to identify discrepancies.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and team-building capabilities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, procurement, and construction teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Regular, reliable attendance.
  • Ability to work productively and meet deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others, individually or in a team environment.
  • Ability to perform work safely and effectively and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment-use instructions, and other policies.
  • Ability to work during normal operating hours and organize and complete work within deadlines.
  • Ability to work overtime and weekends as required.

  • Large-project estimating experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Understand the design engineering process and how generated data supports estimates.
  • Develop quantity components to support construction schedule development and tracking.
  • Review multidisciplinary engineering deliverables to understand construction requirements and execution strategy.
  • Collaborate across engineering disciplines to ensure technical alignment and scope completeness.
  • Consider project execution strategies, sequencing, geographic considerations, and best practices to support practical, buildable solutions.
  • Understand how quantities become components in construction execution.
  • Identify effective methods for quantifying and componentizing scopes of work to support estimating, construction execution, schedule integration, and past cost.
  • Monitor the CTO Queue for new or updated engineering deliverables.
  • Perform component quantity take-offs based on engineering and vendor deliverables, constructability input, and other information.
  • Tag components as appropriate to support field execution and schedule integration.
  • Complete assigned CTO Field Requests.
  • Upload components to InEight Plan – Quantity Tracking.
  • Ensure component take-offs are accurate and completed in time to support the field execution team.
  • Designate Discipline Estimators to perform component take-offs.
  • Help identify the need for additional Cost Codes (WBSs) or component tags and communicate gaps to the Quantity Manager.
  • Understand deviations from estimates during field execution and communicate findings to Discipline Department Managers and Discipline Engineering Principals to improve processes and adjust assumptions.
  • Understand root causes of quantity growth or reduction and implement estimating-process changes as needed.
  • Participate in weekly CTO Coordination Meetings with the CTO team and Field Engineers.
  • Participate in monthly Quantity Review Meetings with Engineering, Field, and CTO teams.
  • When working on estimates, apply industry-standard estimating metrics, production rates, and historical data to validate pricing assumptions and explain variances.
