City of Kalamazoo•Kalamazoo, MI

About The Position

The Civil Engineer I, II, or III supervises and manages capital improvement projects, contracts, budgets, and design in one of three divisions: Water Resources, Wastewater, or Public Works/Traffic. The specific level determines the degree of independence and responsibility. Engineer I is an entry-level position that performs technical engineering work under supervision. Engineer II independently handles a range of engineering work for public construction projects and public services operations and maintenance, potentially serving as a project manager, resident engineer, assistant resident engineer, inspector, or design project leader. Engineer III works under general direction, may manage projects or serve as an assigned technical engineer, and may oversee and train junior staff. Engineer III is responsible for assigned engineering analyses, designs, reports, plans, specifications, or contracts. The position plans and delivers public services projects and capital improvements, including design, budgeting, contracting, surveying, construction inspection, and project coordination. It also supports right-of-way acquisitions, reviews project plans for compliance with codes and standards, and may model water systems to assess proposed projects or infrastructure upgrades.
