About The Position

WSP is seeking an Early Career Civil Engineer specializing in Overhead Transmission Lines for their Richmond, Virginia office. This role involves contributing to projects within the Power Delivery Richmond Line Team, focusing on the design, development, and construction of infrastructure projects. The engineer will provide technical assistance, conduct research, assist with design concepts, and generate accurate project documentation, ensuring adherence to industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. This position is part of WSP's expansion in power delivery expertise following the acquisition of POWER Engineers, Inc., aiming to be a leading global consulting firm for the energy transition.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience.
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with process and concepts for design/build.
  • Familiarity with relevant civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Civil or related, Undergraduate program with an anticipated graduation date of May 2026 or later.
  • Demonstrated interest in Civil Engineering, or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
  • Minimum 2.75 Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Ideal coursework includes structural analysis, concrete, steel, soils, foundations, and surveying.
  • Attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills will be critical for the successful completion of tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Perform basic professional civil engineering work including research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, building, infrastructure, and transportation channels to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
  • Conduct routine engineering functions and provide entry-level technical assistance on various design requirements and operating strategies to ensure the safety and functionality of end-users, systems, and infrastructure.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide basic technical assistance on engineering, design, and construction issues.
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site notebooks/logs.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, including location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Be involved in all aspects of transmission line design for new lines, relocations, upgrades, and fiber optic additions.
  • Support a variety of engineering tasks with the goal to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.
  • Learn basic principles of Civil/Structural/Mechanical Engineering.
  • Assist with project research, field work, and preliminary design calculations and analysis.
  • Support preparation of final design plans, special provisions, and cost estimates.
  • Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
